Located in the heart of the Midwest, SOUTH BEND was not always the bustling center of manufacturing, retailing, farming, professional and service businesses that it is today. A Miami Indian Village was here when Rene Robert Cavelier de la Salle first set foot on Indiana soil in 1679. Pierre Navarre married a Potawatomi squaw when he came to what is now SOUTH BEND as an agent of the American Fur Company in 1802. The log cabin Navarre built for his bride (the first home in our city) is preserved in its original condition in Leeper Park’s Garden of Fragrance. Alexis Coquillard arrived on the scene in 1823 to establish a trading post on the banks of the St. Joseph River. He called his post Big St. Joseph Station. The name was changed to St. Joseph’s in 1827. Two years later, it became South Hold, and in 1830 the name SOUTH BEND became official. The town was platted in 1831 when its population was 168. Industry took its place beside trade when Coquillard built a flour mill and a saw mill in 1838 where the Kankakee River enters the St. Joe River. It was in 1852, however, that the Industrial era of SOUTH BEND really began with the arrival from Ohio of Henry and Clement Studebaker, who founded the firm which attained international fame.

MISHAWAKA’S past began more than 150 years ago in the settling of virgin forests not long after the romantic legend of Princess Mishawaka. MISHAWAKA was made up of several communities, the first of which was St. Joseph’s Iron Works, formed on the south side of the river to mine bog iron. Since being incorporated as a city in 1839, with a population of 862, MISHAWAKA has developed into a successful and progressive city - the largest retail hub in the area.

St. Joseph County is home to approximately 250,000 people whose addresses might be South Bend, Mishawaka, Granger, Notre Dame, Osceola, Lakeville, North Liberty, Walkerton or New Carlisle, Indiana. Together with neighboring Elkhart and LaPorte Counties in Indiana and Berrien and Cass Counties in Michigan, this area is often called Michiana.

People living and working here enjoy all the benefits of being ninety minutes from the hustle and bustle of Chicago, thirty minutes from the beaches of Lake Michigan, and in the midst of a thriving community full of diverse business, educational, cultural and recreational opportunities.

We have prepared this informational booklet to help acquaint you with the quality of life here and the diversity of opportunities awaiting you. We know that moving to a new area requires a certain amount of adjustment and we hope we can help by providing some basic information about our community.

WELCOME!!

A taxpayer and spouse with separate adjusted gross incomes are entitled to an income exemption not to exceed $1,000.00. Depending on what County you reside in, there may be a local tax.
