WHY TO PUBLISH IN OA JOURNALS KNOW ABOUT

QUESTIONABLE PUBLICATIONS

Page 30: Open in action : Know about open access

Questionable Publications

• Use the gold open-access model (author pays)– Article processing charges (APCs)

• Conflict of interest: more papers accepted = more income

• Not all OA journals are bad; not all traditional ones are good

• Monetary transactions from authors to publishers cause many problems

Page 31: Open in action : Know about open access

How Questionable Publishers Works

• Experts at manipulative spamming• Target young and emerging researchers• They mimic legitimate publishers in many

ways

Page 32: Open in action : Know about open access

How Questionable Publishers Works

• They lie; they are counterfeit publishers• They are often one-man operations• Author-oriented vs. reader oriented• Customers include unlucky honest folks and

complicit folks• Chiefly in Asia and Africa, but also many in the UK,

Ontario, Australia, and the US• They also operate bogus conferences• Journals with broad coverage

Page 33: Open in action : Know about open access

Predatory identification

• Criteria• Lack of transparency (hiding

information conventionally given by publishers)

• Deception• Don’t follow industry standards
