There are 2 ways of communicating what other person has said, these are:

Direct speech Indirect speech (REPORTED SPEECH)

In this case:

• You say it literally.• You use quotation marks

Ex: Alice said: “I love to dance”

In this case:

• You paraphrase it.• You don’t need to use

quotation marks

Ex: Alice said she loved to dance.

He said (that) he READ AND ALSO ENJOYED GARDENING. BUT HE DIDN’T HAVE A LOT OF FREE TIME, HE IS A TEACHER

DS: He said, “I’m making dinner.” IS: HE SAID HE WAS MAKING DINNER

DS: He asked, “are you busy tonight?”IS: HE ASKED IF I WAS BUSY THAT NIGHT

DS:   “We went to the movies last night,” he said.IS: HE SAID THAT THEY HAD GONE TO THE MOVIES LAST NIGHT

DS: “I’ll go to the movies ” John said.IS: JOHN SAID HE WOULD GO TO THE MOVIES
