CurriCulumThe Asia-Pacific Executive MBA programme is tailored for senior business leaders. The programme provides management tools and concepts enabling students to develop skills essential to becoming a global leader.

leadership & managerial skillsLeading individuals, groups, and organizations effectively is key to managerial excellence. The objective of the module is to help students manage individuals and groups for high performance by increasing their understanding of individual and interpersonal behaviour, by providing them with conceptual knowledge on group dynamics and to help them understand the challenges of leading and changing organizations.

deCision & risk analysisThis module promotes a scientific paradigm for complex managerial decisions such as problem formulation, model building, and selection of analytical tools and formulation of managerial initiatives ensuing from the results. Students will be better positioned to carry out and communicate business analyses on their own as well as evaluate work undertaken by specialists, analysts and consultants.

managerial eConomiCs and asian institutionsThe module covers managerial economics and governance and institutions in the Asian context.

The first part introduces the basic microeconomic theories of marginal analysis and competitive

markets. It then develops principles of cost, strategic, and organizational analysis. These are useful

in themselves, and also as fundamental building blocks for other disciplines, including cost

accounting, corporate finance, marketing, and business strategy. The second part focuses on the

roles of two major forces that will shape Asia's ability to sustain its dynamism as well as the ability

of foreign firms to face the Asian challenge. These two forces are (1) business groups that

dominate the corporate landscapes of many emerging economies in Asia, and (2) frugal

innovations that characterize the art of improvising effective solutions using limited resources.

management & organisationThe first part of the module will tie concrete organizational situations to essential theories and effective management practices. The second part of the module will highlight components of an effective negotiation. The course will be largely experiential, providing students with the opportunity to develop their skills by participating in negotiations and integrating their experiences with the principles presented.

strategiC marketing & Brand managementTo encourage strategic thinking about customers, brands and markets, this module integrates theory and practice from the core disciplines of marketing strategy, cross-cultural consumer behavior and branding. The approach to learning is experiential and driven by in-depth case studies and examples from Asia and globally as well as student generated projects. This module is conducted in Singapore and overseas to enhance appreciation of marketing dynamics and execution challenges in economies at different stages of development.

aCCounting & management of finanCial resourCesThe module presents an overview of the principles of accounting and financial management with a view to providing students, who may not possess prior accounting or financial training, with an understanding of accounting and financial management concepts such as valuation and capital budgeting, capital structure and the cost of capital, knowledge of financial resource management, understanding financial markets and the environment in which businesses operate.

Corporate strategyThe module concentrates on the skills and actions required of the general manager for the development, communication and implementation of strategic organisational choices in the context of complex business situations. The module will focus on the concept, development and implementation of business strategy in organisations. The course covers the framework and tools of strategic analysis, which lay the foundations of strategic thinking and which have been shaped by the dominant strategy theories developed over the last two decades.

Page 15: NUS Asia-Pacific Executive MBA Brochure

“ The programme made great use of peer-to-peer learning with many of the projects done in groups, which perfectly mirrored today's fast-moving international business world. These cross-cultural experiences, blended with the Asia-wide travel and company visits we completed, made this programme truly unique.”

16

legal issues in BusinessThe module imparts an understanding of how legal considerations and implications affect the

conduct of business across national boundaries. It gives essential exposure to commercial

contracts and international sales as the agreed basis of doing business and the vehicle for

business planning and dispute resolution, the applicable law and forum for cross-border disputes

and the most expedient and cost effective ways of resolving them. Intellectual property,

international trade, competition law and market regulations are also included.

maCroeConomiCs and international finanCeThis module introduces the analytical tools of macroeconomics and international finance and

applies them extensively to real life case studies, with emphasis on Asia. The course begins with

the analysis of business cycle dynamics (how output, employment, interest rate and price are

determined) and the role of stabilization policy. It then moves on to the open economy with

trade and capital flows. Key issues covered here include the determination of exchange rate, how

currency risk can be hedged, how economic “shocks” are transmitted internationally and what

policy can achieve in response.

logistiCs & operations managementThe primary objectives of the module are to provide an introduction to and an understanding of

the substantive knowledge which has developed over the years in the fields of Logistics and

Operations Management, and to highlight the current relevance and strategic significance of the

logistics and operations function in any given enterprise, especially in the Asian context.

innovation management and entrepreneurshipThe first part of this module helps participants to better understand the innovation management

challenge and the entrepreneurial mind-set and skill-set to make innovation happen. The course

is structured around the following three themes (1) understanding innovation opportunities,

threats and risks (2) formulating technological innovation strategy and (3) managing the

innovation process. The second half of the module seeks to develop entrepreneurial thinking by

challenging participants to imagine, envision and think beyond common limits.

Contemporary issues in BusinessCreating and marketing value in today’s increasingly service and knowledge-based economy

requires an understanding of intangible assets and the development and implementation of a

coherent service strategy, to transform these assets into improved business performance. This

module focuses on acquiring, serving and retaining customers. Corporate Governance has been

found to be critical determinant in the performance of businesses. The second part of the module

provides a solid understanding of Corporate Governance from an international perspective – with

a focus on Asia.

thinking Creatively & strategiCallyThe course provides appreciation of Market and Business strategy through a market simulation

exercise thus facilitating the development of critical analysis, problem-solving and decision making

abilities with respect to marketing and business strategy. The second part of this module increases

the students’ capacity for divergent creative and strategic thinking. Through scenario

development and construction, students will develop a helicopter view of the external

environment and its impact on their organization.

“ The faculty refreshed my learnings and met my expectations on learning the best of east and west albeit some rather unconventional approaches in leadership. The relevant, well thought through curriculum has contributed positively to my career. In addition, the class was enriching with experienced classmates sharing their experience on doing business in Asia. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to see it working in real life on our visits to various Asian companies. Most memorable was seeing opportunities and challenges of emerging Asia unfold in real color on our trip to Thailand.”
