Methods of Selection for New Staff

1. Submission of written exams as an objective tool for

selection, we consider the following:

1.1. Different exams for all nursing specialties

(ICU, CCU, NICU, ER, Inpatients, OR…..).

1.2. English and Arabic (MCQ) questions.

1.3.Competency based exams.

1.4. Different forms (A, B, C).

We tested 212 applicant in last 3 months.

2. Developing scored checklist for an

interview examiner.

Orientation Program

Developing a comprehensive orientation program including

three phases (Induction, general, and specific orientation).

Provided by different Departments.

Covers of almost nursing competencies.

All educational materials updated (PPT + handouts).

Submission of new pre & post orientation exam.

Construction of a structured evaluation form fulfilled by

candidates to examine their perception toward the program.

• We performed orientation program for 256

nurses from August till now.

In-service Education

• Provide assessment

by observation.

• Provide Clinical

instruction.

• Follow up.

In-service Education (Cont.)

• Applied a structured

observational competency

checklist.

• Perform the In-service

Education around 24 hrs.

• Covers all areas of

specialties.

• Follow up the newly hired

nurses in the 1st month

and give feedback to the

nursing director.

Continuing Education

Education which builds on

a previous background.

Determined by:

1. Annual assessment

competency checklist.

2. OVRs.

3. Common observed clinical

errors.

4. Performance appraisal

Continuing Education (Cont.)

• Lectures were given all

day long.

• Shared by different

departments e.g.

Infection control &Quality.

• Considering the latest

evidence practices.

• Organizing the training of

evacuation plan with fire

and safety Dept.

American Heart Association (AHA) Courses

• 156 candidates got BLS

provider course at the

last 3 months.

• Our 1st BLS instructor

course has been held by

our training center, few

weeks ago.

Other Courses were Given

• Leadership.

• Communication.

• Wound Care.

• International Computer

Driving License (ICDL)

• Heart saver for care

givers.

Training for Specific Nursing Functions

This is concerned with developing special nurses, expert in technical or specific manual skills. e.g. risk assessment nurse, Central Venus line nurse, & respiratory nurse.

Other Contributions

• Developing Manual

Book for Critical Care

Nursing practices.

• Converting the paper

exams to electronic

and pilot trials

succeeded

Other Contributions (Cont.)

• Using the available

educational devices.

• For proper selection of newly

internship applicant we

developed a comprehensive,

valid exam (each question

have a different score).

• Internship applicant

represent 4 different faculties

of nursing.

Still we have more to do

• Developing interactive

learning materials.

• Developing a valid tool for

annual educational needs

assessment.

• Providing educational

activities for other health care

facilities (investment).

• Developing a manual

handbook for newly hired

nurses.
