The National Programme on Immunization, launched more than three decades ago, works to protect Nigerian children against numerous fatal childhood diseases through vaccinations and education. In an effort to effect real change, the organization created a new and unique strategy for teaching mothers and pregnant women how to best care for their children. The initiative focuses on teaching these women how to create a simple salt and sugar solution to give children struggling with dehydration caused by diarrhea. The Programme additionally aims for complete immunization against tetanus, whooping cough, measles, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, and tuberculosis, among other diseases.

This effort requires significant cooperation between community and religious leaders, government officials, and healthcare professionals. Motivation and education also demand the help of media outlets and educational institutions. Since its inception, the Programme has safeguarded countless children against serious childhood diseases and has made a major impact on standards of care in the country.
