must en have to betekenen: MOETEN Je gebruikt ze voor verplichtingen (obligations). should betekent: ZOU MOETEN Je gebruikt should voor (dwingend) advies.

Net als in het Nederlands Als je to have to in ontkennende zinnen gebruikt, dan verandert de betekenis van moeten juist in niet hoeven. I don’t have to go to that stupid party. Ik hoef niet naar dat stomme feest. She doesn’t have to come if she doesn’t want to. Ze hoeft niet te komen als ze dat niet wil. DUS: have to = moeten / don’t have to = niet hoeven I have to be home by 12 o’clock. / He doesn’t have to be home by 12 o’clock.
