A malignancy is the worse of the two. It involves too little of the positive and too much of the negative aspect of the task , such as a person who can't trust others .
A maladaptation is not quite as bad and involves too much of the positive and too little of the negative , such as a person who trusts too much .
If a stage is managed well , we carry away a certain virtue or psycholosocial strength which will help us thtough the rest of the stages of our lives .
Successfully passing through each crisis involves "achieving" a healthy ratio or balance between the two opposing dispositions that represent each crisis .
The theory is a basis for broad or complex discussion and analysis of personality and behaviour, and also for understanding and for facilitating personal development - of self and others.
It can help the teacher in becoming more knowledgeable and at the same time understanding of the various environmental factors that affect his own and his students' personality and behaviour.
This theory is useful for teaching, parenting, self-awareness, managing and coaching, dealing with conflict, and generally for understanding self and others.
IMPORTANCE OF ERIKSON'S PSYCHO-SOCIAL THEORY OF DEVELOPMENT
Erik Erikson first published his eight stage theory of human development in his 1950 book, Childhood and Society. The stages were included in the chapter entitled "The Eight Ages of Man".
He expanded and refined his theory in later books and revisions, mainly: -Identity and the Life Cycle (1959)-Insight and Responsibility (1964)-The Life Cycle Completed: A Review (1982,revised 1996) by Joan Erickson and vital Involvement in Old Age 1998

TRUST vs. MISTRUST-the feeling that the world is a safe place to be, that the people are reliable and loving.
-apprehensive and suspicious around people.

-Overly trusting even gullible, this person cannot believe anyone would mean them harm
WITHDRAWAL
-characterized by depression, paranoia, and possibly psychosis.
AUTONOMY vs. SHAME AND DOUBT
- independence or freedom, as of the will or one's actions
-to be uncertain about; consider questionable or unlikely; hesitate to believe -ability to feel guilt, regret, or embarrassment

IMPULSIVENESS- a sort of shameless willfulness that leads you to jump into things without proper considerations of your abilities
COMPULSIVENESS- A person feels as if their entire being rides on everything they do, and so everything must be done perfectly.
INITIATIVE vs. GUILT-a positive response to the world’s challenges, taking on responsibilities, learning new skills, feeling purposeful
-the fact or state of having committed an offense, crime, violation, or wrong, especially against moral or penal law; culpability

RUTHLESSNESS -is to be heartless or having no mercy
Sociopathy is the extreme form of ruthlessness.
INHIBITION-afraid to start and take a lead on a project.
Fear to that if fails, they will be blamed
INDUSTRY vs. INFERIORITY-the habit of working hard
-is the quality of being worse than other things or people

-means knowing who you are and how you fit in to the rest of society
-meaning an uncertainty about one’s place in society and the world

REPUDIATION
–To repudiate is to reject.
INTIMACY vs. ISOLATION-the ability to be close to others, as a lover, a friend and as a participant in the society
-the state of being in a place or situation that is separate from others

PROMISCUITY- tendency to be intimate too freely, too easily, and without any depth to your intimacy
EXCLUSIONS- tendency to isolate oneself from love, friendship and community and to develop a certain hatefulness in compensations for one’s loneliness
GENERATIVITY vs. STAGNATION
-is an extension of love in the future
-self absorption, caring for no-one

OVEREXTENSION – trying to be generative that they don’t have time for themselves.
REJECTIVITY- too little generativity and too much stagnation and you are no longer participating in or contributing in the society
EGO INTEGRITY vs. DESPAIR-means coming to terms with your life and thereby coming to terms with the end of life
-to no longer have any hope or belief that a situation will improve or change

PRESUMPTION -this happens when a person presumes ego integrity without actually facing the difficulties of old age
DISDAIN – a contempt of life, one’s own or anyone’s: The person becomes very negative and appears to hate life
