AVIATION
Presented by:

Scheme of PresentationIntroductionAviation and Environmental issues
Initiatives Aimed at addressing environmental concerns
Case studiesPolicy recommendationsConclusion
1. INTRODUCTIONAviation impacts the environment because
aircraft engines emits noise, gases and particulates.
Emissions from Aviation currently account for 3.5 per cent of the total emission.
Carbon dioxide emissions from aviation are expected to grow by about 175% between 1990 and 2050.
2. AVIATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
Carbon Emissions - Effects on Air quality Aircraft Noise Development of Airports Aircraft Life cycle - Production and
recycling
3/1. INITIATIVES AIMED AT ADDRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL
CONCERNS Multilateral Initiatives - ROLE OF ICAO Resolution A36-22 (Appendix-L)(2007) Resolution A37-18 & A37-19 (oct.2010)
a) The Preamble:-
b) Article 33 of the Chicago convention
c) Annexure 16 of ICAO
3/2 KYOTO PROTOCOLProtocol to “United Nation Framework
Convention On Climate Change” (UNFCCC)Article 25 of ProtocolObjective of Kyoto Protocol5 Principals of Kyoto Protocola.Commitment to annexed countries b.Implementationc.Minimizing Impacts on developing countriesd.Accounting, Reporting and reviewe.Compliance
3/3. INITIATIVES AIMED AT ADDRESSING ENVIRONMENTAL
CONCERNS Bilateral Initiatives
Increasing tendency to include environmental clauses within such agreements.
E.g. - The US and EU Agreement of March 2007.
Unilateral Initiatives
E.g. - EU is currently preparing to bring all flights that land or take off from a European airport within its emissions trading scheme from 2012.10
4. A CASE STUDY
Farley v. Skinner No. 2,(2001)
House of Lords
The house purchased by the plaintiff is seriously affected by the Aircraft noise.
Plaintiff’s enjoyment of property was diminished by Aircraft noise
Professional negligence by suvayor Case for Reference Watts v. morrow[1991] 1 W.L.R. 1421 Knott v. Bolton 45 con. L.R. 127
5. POLICY RECCOMENDATIONS
Emission Levels- Improving efficiencies Alternatives Fuels- Bio
fuels(combination of plants and waste. Route Optimization- helps to reduce
emission up to 18 per cent. Emission Trading Scheme Improved Operating Procedures
6. CONCLUSION
It can be concluded that in the wake of Aviation industry at the helm of transport and globalization, we should strive to provide a green future for flight operations. In spite of all issues aviation has been improving constantly for the last 50 years. The policy recommendations suggested coupled with technical advances, infrastructure improvements, operational efficiently promise a green future for aviation industry.
