RESEARCH ON HORROR
WHY THIS GENRE?Today in class we have been analysing horror movies, we have been doing this because we have chosen that the genre of our film will be horror. Therefore we now have to make a research on this specific genre.
HISTORY• 1700s- Gothic Horror, was an extensión of a genre of literatura. It was
mostly practised in Great Britain and North America.• 1896- Geeorges Méliès would go on to créate what is considered the first
horror film in history. It was called “The haunted castle”.• 1910- first Frankenstein adapted by Thomas Edinson’s studos.• 1930s- this is when the horro term came into use in the film industry. 1985,
the Lumiere brothers created a snippet called “spook tale”• WW1- The German expresión, was a style of cinema that emphasized
expression over realistic depictions of reality.• 1950s- Pulp Sci-Fi horror that was taken over by William Castle.• 1980s- “The nightmare of Elm Street”, was created by Wes Craven in the
slasher cycle.• 1990s- parodys started to appear. 1996 Craven’s self aware film “scream”
was created. • 90s-2000- psychological horror and thriller with films like “The sixth sense”.• 2000- horror films were all about gore, one of the most famous films of this
era is “Saw”.
WHAT ARE HORROR FILMS?The purpose of horror films is to seek negative emotions from the audience and plays with the fears and wekenesses of those who are watching.Horror films usually center on the arrival of an evil force, person, or event. Many Horror films include mythical creatures such as ghosts, vampires, and zombies. Traditionally, Horror films incorporate a large amount of violence and gore into the plot. Though it has its own style, Horror film often overlaps into Fantasy, Thriller, and Science-Fiction genres.
HORROR CONVENTIONS
LOCATION AND SETTINGNormally horror films are located in isolated places:• Woods• Cave• Countryside• Isolated town• Abandoned house
PROPSThe props that we usually see in horror movies are weapons that are used for stabbing, it is not usual to see guns.• Machete • Knife• Axe• ChainsawA part from weapons we also see dolls and toys.
CHARACTERS• Killers or some sort of
threatening character• Children who are usually the
victims• Teenagers • parents
SOUND AND MUSIC• Horror films use a lot of non-diegetic sound to set a mood.• Although they do use a lot of diegetic sounds like for
example the music of a ballarina box or the sound of screaming and talking when nobody is there like ghosts etc.
• Dialogue is very common for the main character to look as if it where talking to spirits.
