BRECKNOCK BULLETIN May 2011 Brecknock Elementary School * 361 School Road, Denver, PA 17517 * (717) 445-8600 This year at Brecknock, many of our students have been involved in learning ac9vi9es sparked by their interests and passions. For example, Mrs. McCabe’s class set out to change the world this year, and change they did! Their service project of crea9ng pins brought in over $600 so far for the relief efforts for Hai9 and Japan! We are so proud of their accomplishments! I see more examples of studentcentered learning whenever I visit a classroom and witness students researching a topic of interest, presen9ng ideas to the class in an original way, and naviga9ng their way through a rich curriculum in a manner in which they choose. We want students to own their learning. It is important that they do so, to connect the content explored to their lives in authen9c ways. As a parent, you have the great opportunity to help students find and engage their passions. Talk with your child about what he is learning, and how that material will be useful in his real life experiences. Take note about which topics spark your child’s interest, and help him pursue learning more about them. Nurture posi9vity in your child, and communicate with him that efforts put into learning will definitely yield high reward. Invest in the 9me and resources to help your child explore his passions. Be suppor9ve of the interests and ac9vi9es your child finds joy in, and support, don’t force, devo9ng 9me to those ac9vi9es/interests. Lastly, communicate with your child’s teacher about his interests! We always seek to learn more about the special quali9es of your child! Thank you for your con9nued partnership!
