On September 28th 1978 I arrived in Rome as part of agroup of new seminarians ready to start our studies for thepriesthood at the English College and the PontificalGregorian University. That night John Paul I died, after

only thirty three days as Pope. That meant we werepresent at the funeral of one Pope and the election of thenext, and in the years that followed I saw a good deal ofPope John Paul II: I was a choir member and altar serverat pontifical Masses, I heard him preach and speak onmany occasions and I got to shake his hand several times. As sacristan of the English College when he came to sayMass for the fourth centenary of the seminary I got to talkto him briefly and he declared that I looked younger thanmy years - something I have since claimed to be aninfallible statement!

Pope John Paul II died at about 9:30 p.m. on SaturdayApril 2nd 2005. It was the eve of the Second Sunday ofEaster, renamed as Divine Mercy Sunday by the Pope inthe year 2000, and the Vigil Mass was celebrated by thePopes secretary in his room before he died. This yearDivine Mercy Sunday is a month later, May 1st, and onthis day in Rome John Paul II will be beatified - officiallyrecognized by the Church as Blessed Pope John Paul theGreat. Normally five years must pass before the process of research fobeatification and eventual canonization can even begin, but Pope Benedicordered the investigation to start immediately and earlier this year he confirmedthe miraculous healing of a French nun whose sisters had prayed for theintercession of John Paul. His former secretary, who said that last Mass in Pop

John Pauls bedroom, is now Stanisaw Cardinal Dziwisz, Archbishop of Krakwand he recently said what many of us feel: It will be a great joy for us when he iofficially beatified, but as far as we are concerned he is already a Saint.

Meanwhile we have additional reasons for great joy much closer to home. Thiweekend more than fifty children will make their First Communion. Then, nexSaturday (May 7th) Bishop John Noonan will celebrate the 5 p.m. Mass. He haalready been in the parish to visit Bishop Moore and Morning Star schools but hcomes for his first official visit to Saint Charles church to celebrate the 50thanniversary of our Knights of Columbus and he will have dinner with the Knightafter Mass. Our Lady of the Lakes Council 5150 received its Charter on May 71961, when Orlando was a very different place, and ever since then the Knighthave been leaders and generous supporters of the parish. The 5 p.m. Mass i

liable to be crowded so I hope that most of you will stick to your usual SundayMass times, even though that means you wont see the Bishop. However, you wilcertainly have other opportunities. The children of the school will see him whenhe celebrates Mass for them and joins in the May crowning of Mary this comingWednesday (May 4th) and he will be here again for Confirmation in NovemberMost importantly, I know how much Bishop Noonan appreciates your prayers fohim; and his blessing on Saturday evening will extend to all our parishionerspresent or not.

... there is a profound analogy between the Fiat which Mary said in reply to the angel, and theAmen which every believer says when receiving the body of the Lord. Mary was asked to believethat the One whom she conceived through the Holy Spirit was the Son of God (Lk 1:30-35). In continuity with the Virgin's faith, in the Eucharistic mystery we are asked to believe thatthe same Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of Mary, becomes present in his full humanity anddivinity under the signs of bread and wine.

WARNINGThe Diocese has advised us that two churches in Winter Park are being advertised as King of Kings Catholic Cathedral and St. Doro-thy Catholic Community, which one might presume are affiliated with the Diocese of Orlando and the Roman Catholic Church. However, please be advised that they are both schismatic churches that are not in communion with the Holy See. All validparishes for the Diocese of Orlando are listed on the diocesan Web site - www.orlandodiocese.org. Included in this list orecognized Catholic churches are those in communion with the Holy See that fall under the jurisdiction of Eastern Rite bishopsin the United States, such as the Maronite, Ukrainian and Byzantine Churches.
