What’s MA OS all about?

Organizational environment is complex and dynamic
To survive, organizations need to continuously adapt and develop
E.g., Change their strategy, change how they work internally
(Project) managers, internal policy advisors, external consultants
formulate interventions / solutions and ways of implementing
them
To do so well they need to:
Understand the issue at hand based on evidence (data,
analysis, conclusion) - diagnosis
Draw on most up-to-date research on the topic
Communicate effectively with relevant stakeholders
Guide a team to facilitate implementation

Duration – 1 year, in English
Focus on complexity and dynamics
MA OS covers the whole range of present-day
organizations
MA OS trains organizational analysts
Focus on broad and transferable skills to facilitate
employment in a wide variety of organizations in the
Netherlands and internationally
Train generalists, not specialists
Approach:

Interdisciplinary approach (sociology, psychology, management
and business studies)

Master thesis Organization Studies (24 ECTS):
Semester 2
Competence test to show that you:
• can perform scientific research independently
• have deep knowledge of the topic
• are able to interpret and communicate research
results
Approach:
• Thesis circles of up to 8 students supervised by staff
members
• Research topic within the framework of the research
program of the department
• Thesis has to be written in English

How to finish well?

• Complete all the course work
• Complete the Master’s thesis by the end of June
(or mid-August)
• Defend the Master’s thesis in June (or in August)
• Graduation in a collective ceremony and within the
Master circle (with guests) at the beginning of
October
Variant 1: Extended Master Consultancy

• 1,5 year long program
• Same courses as in the regular Master’s OS
• 1 year junior traineeship with partner organization
while writing Master thesis (2&3 semester)
• Research proposal around a problem experienced
by the partner organization
• Some additional assignments and workshops

Admission requirements for Extended Master

• Admission: Same as regular Master OS
• Students have to apply and be accepted by the
Department of Organization Studies and the partner
organization in the spring of 2017
• Information session and speed date in May, 2017
• Deadline for applications for 2017/18 is in May, 2017

Variant 2: Research Master in Social Science

• 2-year research oriented program in Social Sciences
with focus on individual in social contexts
• Interdisciplinary approach that integrates social
psychology, sociology, organization studies and
methodology
• Trains all-round researchers
• Admission takes place after selection. There is a limited
number of openings (max 30)
• Students must apply for enrolment in the program
