The following document outlines the recent changes to the Life Styles Inventory™ (LSI) reports in August 2015.

These changes include the addition of a Spread of Opinion page, showing the level of agreement/disagreement among the respondents in the LSI 2 Description-by-Others.

What is Spread of Opinion?

• Builds upon Description-by-Others (LSI 2) results to show the spread of opinion among those who described the focal individual

• Indicates whether respondents agree, disagree, or whether there is neither strong agreement nor disagreement

How Spread of Opinion Works

• Shading for each style depicts the amount of variation in respondents’ descriptions (standard deviation)

• Shading reflects the extent to which respondent’s descriptions vary compared to other respondents in the norming sample

*Length of extension is still the extent to which the style characterises the focal individual

Shading Definitions

• Dark shading – very narrow or narrow spread of opinion (lower standard deviation)

• Light shading – wide or very wide spread of opinion (higher standard deviation)

• Moderate shading – average spread of opinion (moderate standard deviation)

Spread of Opinion - Implications

Narrow spread of opinion means the individual:– Interacts with and is perceived by others in the same way

– May have a difficult time increasing or decreasing his/her use of a style

Wide spread of opinion implies the individual:– Systematically or unknowingly interacts with others in an inconsistent

way

– May have an easier time adjusting the frequency with which the style is exhibited

It is useful to discuss while interpreting and debriefing:– Why some styles are displayed more consistently than others

– Why other styles are exhibited only when interacting with certain people

– Whether it is useful or detrimental to selectively exhibit a particular style
