LITTER LESS CAMPAIGN 2013-201470th Primary school of Athens

Page 2: Litterlessfinal

This is the fourth year that our school took part in the Litter Less campaign.

The first step was to create the Eco-committee..

After that we immediately started working…

Page 3: Litterlessfinal

The committee consisted of 24 pupils and 4 teachers. We met regularly and discussed about the ways we could keep our school and the surrounding area “litterless”. The pupils were also responsible of informing their schoolmates of any decisions we made.

Page 4: Litterlessfinal

One of the first things we decided on was our Eco-code!!

Page 5: Litterlessfinal

It consists of eight rules and is in the form of a large flower.

Page 6: Litterlessfinal

One of the problems we had to face, was the littering in the school yard. A member of the committee came up with the idea of creating a Green Team. This team consisted of 12 pupils, one from each classroom, who wore a green cloth on their arms and their responsibility was to advise and inform the other pupils about littering and the correct ways of recycling!!

Page 7: Litterlessfinal

Another excellent idea was the Green Flag!! It was awarded at the end of the week to the cleanest classroom!! At the end of the school year, the classroom that won the Flag the most times would go on a trip!!

Page 8: Litterlessfinal

But we had a draw! So the pupils of the third and the fifth year won a trip to ΕΛΚΕΘΕ (Hellenic Centre of Marine Research).

They were informed about the importance of keeping our seas clean and the sea creatures that are so vital to our eco-system.

They looked through stereoscopes and admired the organisms of the sea!

Page 9: Litterlessfinal

The scientists also informed us about the importance of biodiversity…

… and they showed us a bathyscaphe that can dive up to 600 metres deep!!!

Page 10: Litterlessfinal

Throughout the year, we also had an environmental poster competition and these two were the winners!!!

Page 11: Litterlessfinal

In December some of our pupils attended a Medies (Mediterranean Education Initiative for Education and Sustainability) presentation at the old bed of river Ilisos.

Mr Psalidas talked to the students… … about the hydrologic circle and the river Ilisos.

Page 12: Litterlessfinal

After that we discussed about the experience and the result was these posters…

Page 13: Litterlessfinal

We liked this wonderful place so much that we wrote a letter to the Mayor asking him to give us permission to adopt this part of Ilisos…

This is his answer giving as permission!

And this is an article about our visits and the adoption, in our school newspaper.

Page 14: Litterlessfinal

So we visited it twice throughout the year. We took photos of the animals and the plants that live there …

Page 15: Litterlessfinal

.. . and discussed about the ways that we can help protect this area.

Page 16: Litterlessfinal

We started keeping a diary of our visits to Ilisos river and made plans for the next school year!

Page 17: Litterlessfinal

In November our pupils created a questionnaire about the recycling habits of people visiting Athens, went to Areopagitoy street and interviewed tourists…

One of the most important questions was this one… And their answer was this…

Page 18: Litterlessfinal

So we thought that we should try and do something about it….

We wrote a letter to the Mayor, presenting him with the results of our survey…

… and suggesting of distributing a leaflet we created to the hotels in our area
