CHURCHILL LIBRARY REPORT
April 2014
The library hosted one of the locations for the laptop deployment for our campus.
The librarian attended 3 days of the Texas Library Conference at the San Antonio Convention Center. There were several sessions that offered various strategies and ideas to be shared and implemented with teachers in classes or in the library.
National Library Week was celebrated with a display and an opportunity for students to enter a drawing to win a gift card each time they checked out a book.
The second session of the iPad Cohort was attended by the librarian. Several apps were discussed, and 3 in particular were the focus: Tellegami, Chirp, and Thinglink.
We celebrated Fiesta with a display of related books.
National Poetry Month allowed us to encourage students to be creators of poetry with book spines. Several poems were created using a random collection of titles on display.
Churchill’s UIL Academic Teams continue to meet and practice every Tuesday morning and afternoon, both before and after school.
The WC Student Book Club met and discussed Tiger Lily and decided to bring favorite titles to encourage summer reading. The next meeting will be May 20th.
The WC Faculty Book Club—Read Between the Lions, met and discussed their book choice, Divergent, and selected The Fault in our Stars as the next title to be discussed at the May 28th meeting.
The library hosted one of the campus locations for the new laptop deployment.
The Summa reception was held in the library before the ceremony in the auditorium.
An athletic scholarship signing took place before school for a Churchill Swimmer.
Teachers administering AP tests met for training and preparation.
Students and classes were displaced into the library for 2 days during testing.
Dr. Wulfsberg’s Senior English classes completed a research assignment focused
on accessing reference resources in relation to a specific word. They created
presentations with a variety of aspects of their word, such as synonyms, foreign
translations, pronunciations, etc., and cited all sources in MLA format.
One of the ALE classes accessed digital resources to research recycling
information. They printed these resources to be used with an in-class assignment.
Ms. Charlton’s GT English classes responded to their readings of nonfiction
selections by collaboratively creating a Google Site for each title. Group members
created and shared access to the site, and ultimately shared these with Ms.
Charlton.
Several English I classes researched issues in the SIRS Issues Researcher
database in preparation for writing their persuasive essays. Computers and iPads
were used to access the database, and notes were taken in both digital and print
formats, depending upon the class. Citations were created and saved for future use
in the essay.
