A place for learning and discussion
BOOK ISLAND
There are workshops here!
I did a little extra searching for a good field trip location because, even though I really liked the botanical garden I found during my first exploration of Second Live, I felt there must be something more geared toward what we are trying to accomplish in this course.
And, I found it! Book Island is a fantastic place, filled with educators and learners. There were workshop offerings and chat sessions in addition to comfy places to gather and learn or share.
This location is a wonderful example of how technology is being used to instruct, learn, and grow.
The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (RAWA)
Here, is a perfect example of how knowledge can be shared and taught using new and emerging technologies.
The RAWA exhibit area showcased projects regarding schools, literacy, clinics, and orphanages, and included a slideshow and other interesting tidbits of information.
Book Island Had beautiful gathering spots
In addition to offering many different workshops and exhibits designed to share and teach different forms of writing, there were several beautiful gathering areas.
This glowing tree with wooden bench is a perfect place to sit with a group and discuss a recent workshop or reading/writing chat session.
Live learning and chat events are regularly scheduled
There are several interesting events that I am planning to explore.
The “Improv for Writers” event on Oct. 16 looks very interesting, and I love the idea of “Livewriting” sessions. This is a concept I participate in through a writer’s forum I am a member of. We call them “Chat Challenges.” Basically, everyone meets in a chat room and a moderator sets a timer, usually 20mins. We all start writing at the sound of the “Whip” and then report how many words we wrote when the whip sounds again after 20mins.
Chat challenges are great motivators!
Just over the hill, is a fantastical place…
A little bit of exploring around Book Island revealed a magical place with glowing and colorful horses.
Behind me was a meditation pavilion that would be perfect for the writer looking for a little metaphysical inspiration.
All in all, I found Book Island to be a wonderful and interesting learning environment.
