Give students a sense of where they are on the path to success during the semester.

I should be as good as the best student right now or I’m not happy.

Problem:

Students can undermine their own motivation by not recognizing that their learning goal is realized over time by evaluating and synthesizing the weekly material and exiting the course with new skills.

Reality:

You don’t have to know how to draw when you enter an observational drawing class.

Learning skills are fundamental for each individual in a knowledge economy.

Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives

Successful synthesis resulting in creative products happens near the end of the course.Learning starts at the bottom with remembering and goes up over time and with the addition of information, skill practice, and creating drafts and prototypes .

Students need to know that their skills build through the term from simply remembering to creating.

If students know the parts of learning, they know they are safely on the road to success.

Maslow’s hierarch of needs can be applied to student success.

Learning takes place when students feel safe and that they belong in the organization and process.

Learning to learn is the ability to pursue and organize one's own learning, either individually or in groups.

When a student knows the learning process, that knowledge builds confidence to live a creative life at the peak of Maslow’s hierarchy and to flow through Bloom’s steps in a continuous process of lifelong learning.
