What is Leadership ?

• Leadership is a process in which a leader attempts to influence his or her followers to establish a Goal.

• Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it

• Leadership is not just a person in a high position

• Leaders are not born, they are made.

• Leader is the one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.

• Leaders thinks problems as Opportunities.

• Leaders job is to rally people to better future.

Does Islam teaches about Leadership?

The Messenger of Allah said “All of you are shepherds and each of you is responsible for his flock. An imam is a shepherd and he is responsible for those in his care. A man is a shepherd in respect of his family and is responsible for those in his care. The woman is a shepherd in respect of her husband's house and is responsible for what is in her care. The servant is a shepherd in respect of his master's property and is responsible for what is in his care. All of you are shepherds and each of you is responsible for his flock.Here Shepherds means Leader. It our responsibility to become leaders. (Sahih Al Bukhari & Muslim)

1. Humility : It is found in most of the effective leaders

2. Integrity : The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles

3. Decisiveness : Decisions making ability in critical conditions

4. Take Risk : They have courage to act in situation where results are not assured.

1. Autocratic

2. Bureaucratic

3. Democratic

4. Laissez-Faire

Autocratic

1. All Decision making powers are with the leaders2. They do not entertain any suggestion from their

subordinates.3. Does not consult staff, nor allowed to give any

inputs4. Followers are expected accept orders.5. Rely on threats & punishments to influence staffs6. Do not trust staffs or followers.

Pros & Cons of Autocratic

PROS ConsNew untrained staffs do not know which task to perform

Staffs becomes tense & fearful.

Staffs do not respond to any other leadership styles

No suggestions are heard.

When there is a limited time to make a decision.

Low staff morale, absenteeism & work stopage

Sometimes a best effective style to used Leaders only make the decision

For eg Adolf Hitler, Leona Helmsley of the Helmsley Hotel. She fired a lady who was working for past 8 years just because she used her dry cleaner to remove a stain from Leona clothing.

1. Always manages by book & process.2. Everyone done according to procedure &

policy3. They are more like Police Officer not a leader.4. Enforces the rules.5. They gives you fixed official duties.6. They write & maintain each records.

PROS ConsStaffs performing routines task over & over.

Work habits form that are hard to break even if they are no longer useful

Staffs needs to understand certain process or procedure

Staffs loose their interest in their jobs

Safety & security training conduct Staffs do only what is expected of them & no more

Task where one needs to handle cash One cannot create a new rule to do some task.

For eg. Software Companies, Police station, Courts, Income Tax department

1. Encourages followers to be a part of decision making

2. Keep staffs informed everything that affects their work.

3. They share decision making & responsibilities.4. Gathers all the information, suggestion, & then

make a decision 5. They produce high quality of work6. Recognizes & encourage achievement

Pros & Cons of Participative

PROS ConsAllows followers to share their view or suggestion.

It cannot be used when there is very less time to get everyone’s input

It provide opportunities for staffs to develop personal growth & job satisfaction

It cannot be used when you can’t afford mistakes.

It encourages team building & participation.

Manager’s feels threatened by this type of leadership.

Includes staffs or followers in decision making & problem solving difficulties.

Some group members may feel alienated, if their ideas are not accepted for action. This may create a feeling of frustration and ill-will.

For eg. Gandhiji, Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple) , Abraham Lincoln, Pharmaceutical industry, Hospitals and labs,Google, Facebook, Amazaon.com

Laissez-Faire or Free Rein

1. Its a French word which means “Leave Alone”.2. They allow maximum freedom to subordinates3. All powers are given to staffs.4. They are given free hand to decide their

policies & methods.5. They does not lead but leaves the group

entirely to itself

Pros & Cons of Laissez-Faire

PROS ConsIt is very useful in businesses where creative ideas are important

It needs only experts or specialists

It is highly motivational as people has control over their working life

It makes co ordination & decision making time consuming

Staffs does not feel insecure if there is no manager above them.

Relies on good team work

Staffs enjoys working in this leadership Manager doesn’t understand his role & hopes that staff will cover for him or her

For eg. Warren Buffett (American Business Magnate), Advertising Agency, StartUp Social Media Companies, Product Design firms.

1. Thinking of problems as opportunities : Captain Russell’s challenges Bhuvan to play the cricket match. It was a problem for him but he takes up as an opportunity to bring happiness in the lives of his village folks.

2. Dream Big / Vision : Winning the match means 3 years of Tax free Happiness.

3. Put Community before self: He did not dream for himself alone, he dreamt for whole community
