General Studies and Critical Thinking
General StudiesThe Education Liaison and Events Team have collaborated with academic departmentsto develop a programme of sessions designed to assist students in Years 12 & 13 whoare currently studying for their General Studies A-level qualifications.
The sessions have been devised and developed to supplement the existing teaching ofGeneral Studies within school timetables. These sessions are innovative and interactiveand will offer students the chance to expand their understanding of the subjects whichare covered in the study of General Studies at A-level. The sessions are also designed tointroduce the students to some of the study skills and techniques used within HigherEducation.
The project has been developed by consulting the three main exam board syllabi(Edexcel, OCR & AQA) which offer General Studies as an A-level. In developing thisproject, we have aligned the three syllabi to find areas of similarity between them.As a result of this, the sessions involved will be useful to all students working towardsan A-level in General Studies regardless of which exam board’s syllabus they are following.
Each of the sessions involved in the programme will be delivered bymembers of academicstaff from various departments across the University. Utilising their expertise in applicablesubject areas they will deliver sessions based around a series of ‘Key Questions’.The sessions are interactive, engaging and beneficial for participating students.
Previous sessions have included:
‘How Science affects Society?’‘Should the punishment fit the crime?’‘Mass Media – Representation or Reality’‘The heart – From pre-history to modern miracles of treatment’
The programme for 2011/12 delivery is yet to be finalised. However, if you would beinterested in finding out more about our General Studies support sessions or wouldlike to speak to us about how we can help you support your students in their A-levelGeneral Studies please contact the Education Liaison Officer for your area.
PAGE 15
Critical ThinkingIn addition to the General Studies programme, we are also able to offer support toschools whose students take Critical Thinking as an A-level. Once again, academic staffhave been heavily involved in helping us to develop sessions which introduce studentsto the key concepts involved within the study of Critical Thinking.
Sessions have previously covered the following topics:
• The language of Critical Thinking• Reasoning and Decision making• Assessing and developing an argument• Credibility of Evidence
The sessions have previously been delivered using a variety of stimulus material, suchas films, articles, artwork and texts which have been chosen consciously to provokedebate and discussion amongst participating students.
Once again, we would be very keen to hear from schools who are offering Critical Thinkingas an A-level subject. If you would be interested in participating in some support sessionsat Edge Hill University, please do not hesitate to contact us.
