How Does Consumption Gives Knowledge?

Moviegoing over the Thanksgiving holiday dropped 21

percent compared with the period a year ago

Two new wide-release movies, “Penguins of Madagascar” and “Horrible Bosses 2,” became

the latest studio efforts to underperform.

The No. 1 movie in North America was “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1,” which took in an estimated $56.9 million from Friday to Sunday (25-26 of October)

Domestic ticket sales for “Mockingjay” now total a hefty $225.7 million but are nonetheless running roughly 24 percent behind the last

“Hunger Games” film.

“Penguins of Madagascar,” a 20th Century Fox release of a DreamWorks Animation movie, was second for the weekend, generating estimated ticket sales of $25.8 million, for a total since

opening on Wednesday of $36 million. Analysts had expected a five-

day total closer to $45 million for “Penguins of Madagascar,” which cost

$135 million to make.

The birds faced competition from “Big Hero 6” (Disney), which placed third by taking in about $18.8

million, for a four-week total of $167.2 million. “Interstellar” (Paramount) chugged away in fourth

place, selling an estimated $15.8 million in tickets, for a four-week total of $147.1 million.

“Horrible Bosses 2,” which cost New Line, a division of the Warner Bros.,

about $40 million to make, was a disappointing fifth. This R-rated

sequel, which received poor reviews, took in about $15.7 million,

for a total since opening on Wednesday of $23 million — or

roughly 40 percent less than prerelease surveys had predicted.

One bright spot from art houses: “The Imitation

Game,” an Oscar hopeful from the Weinstein

Company, arrived in four locations and took in a

sturdy $482,071.
