1982-1986
•PhD Microbiology
(University of Warwick)
1986-1989
•Executive PT MBA
(Bradford School of Management)

Some Hot Issues- a degree in two years?!
•Reviewing engagement with students
•“Elite to Universal HE system”
• Students as customers
Changing circumstances …
• Increasing competition
•Progressive de-regulation
•Students as customers

University Plan 2003-2008
Changing circumstances …
• Innovation and variation in programme delivery (distance learning, part-time, 24/7 learning)
• An increasingly diverse student population
• Media and marketing savvy consumers
• Changing pace of technology
• IT literacy, particularly amongst the under 25’s
Why did students go for it?
Engage today's students where they learn, on the Internet, audio players and mobile phones
The application of this technological innovation allows for the introduction of a 24/7 learning environment in a rapidly developing customer led 24/7 culture
m-learning“….concerned with learner mobility, in the sense that learners should be able to engage in educational activities without the constraints of having to do so in a highly delimited location” (Mobile Learning [2005], Editors: Kukulska-Hume & Traxler)
Education becomes more portable than ever before!
Digital convergence
“Essentially convergence means we are doing
more with technology but we want to use
fewer gadgets to do it with.”
Mark WardBBC Technology Correspondent

“Our students have changed radically. Today’s students are no longer the people our educational system was designed to
teach”. Marc Prensky
Food for thought
The “new media”
• email (250,000)
• 30 weeks playing video games
• 60 weeks on the mobile phone
• 21 weeks on-line
........ more
Gartner claim that by 2009
•50% courses offered will be a hybrid face-to-face and on-line learning
•more than 80% students will use mobile technology as a tool for learning.
