Six Steps to improved writing
Step 1 -Exploring Ideas
* Consider the subject (topic)
* Consider the Purpose-to informto persuadeto entertainto narrateto illustrateto evaluateto analyze
How do you know the purpose?
*Consider the audience -varies on situation and purpose
Step 2 -Prewriting
• Generating Ideas• Brainstorming• Clustering• Free writing• Questioning• Journaling
Step 3 -Organizing
• Choosing details that answer the prompt
• Creating the outline from chosen details
Step 4 -First Draft
• Using the outline or organizer, consider the content to “fill in” the essay
• Thesis statement w/in the introductory paragraph
• Body paragraphs • Concluding paragraph
Step 5 -Revising
• Review the draft• Cut parts• Add information• Rearrange
sentences and paragraphs to increase logical flow of the essay
• Rewrite for clarity• Read it aloud
Step 5 -Final Copy (Publish)
-Print a copy-Edit -look for grammar and writing mechanic errors
-Print another copy- Proof - look for spelling errors,
word choice, punctuation
Then print copy for grading and submit to BlackBoard
Essay 1- Study the FCC poster, which the college sends to prospective students, and respond in an essay to the following questions: what image of itself is the college establishing with this poster? What elements of the poster’s composition and design support this image? From your own experience and what you have observed this week at FCC, is that self-image accurate? Why or why not?
