My Plan

• To develop a learning module on therapeutic midwifery skills for first year undergraduate midwifery students

Background

• New midwifery program commencing 2009

• Developed in collaboration with CPIT

• Entire program to be delivered in flexible format with combination of face to face, online, tutorial group and midwifery practice facilitator support.

Course considerations

• New Zealand needs more confident, skilled midwives

• Midwives need colleagues who are skilled, confident and competent

• Midwifery employers (DHBs, Community trusts etc) need midwives who are able to practice autonomously within their scope of practice

• Women outside the main centers want midwifery education that is – Accessible– Appropriate to their learning needs– Prepares them for autonomous midwifery practice

• This part of a larger course and some of the considerations will be decided as part of this larger course

• Need to provide adequate support and sharing opportunities to promote student learning

• Need to make sure learning opportunities and resources support the needs of ;– learners, – midwifery education – midwifery profession
