DESCRIPTION

The paper deals with the curricula of master programs taught at IILS (Institute of Information Studies and Librarianship, Charles University, Faculty of Arts). IILS offers two master programs: New Media Studies (NMS) and Information Studies and Librarianship (ISL). ISL traditionally follows the bachelor program with the same name taught at IILS although it is expected that the program is studied not only by bachelors from IILS. Everybody who has a bachelor degree from any discipline can study this program. The master program ILS is possible to study in three various specializations – information specialization, librarian or book culture one. The master program NMS started in 2005 as an independent program offering new views on information science dealing with digital culture and art, new media technologies, social networks and their analysis, information systems design etc. Students of this program come from various bachelor programs (art, film, informatics, languages etc.). Today we have a problem with content covering of taught subjects and students are more interested in NMS than in information specialization of ILS. The librarian specialization keeps a stable amount of students, the book culture one has to be upgraded and quite basically changed. The paper asks the question if it is possible to make the curricula of both programs more effective and tries to show the path to an upgrade of all master programs at IILS.
