The benefits of tourism.

Some Ideas….

Popular leisure activity – relax, have fun, ‘recharge batteries’ - experience different customs and cultures - open our minds / broaden our horizons.

A personal perspective

Vital for some countries – people rely on tourism for income – attracts investment from governments and companies – creates employment – improves standard of living

Economic perspective

Drawbacks of tourism

On the other hand…

Negative impact on environment – excessive building – destroy natural habitats – spoil landscape – pollution and waste – pressure on local resources (food, water, energy)

Environmental perspective

Rise in cost of living – price of goods and services up – second homes – affect local people

Economic perspective

Local traditions lost – traditional jobs and skills dying out (e.g. farming, fishing) – local people forced to work in tourism industry
