How were the patriots able to achieve their independence?

Britain's disadvantages
• There was a lot of geographical distance between Britain and the 13 American colonies.
• They did not have the knowledge of the land.
• They were “fighting for a paycheck” and not for their freedom, such as the Patriots were.
Patriots’ Advantages
• They were fighting on their own land and had better knowledge of its layout.
• They used guerilla warfare as opposed to standing shoulder to shoulder.
• They were fighting for their freedom and not for a paycheck.
Helpful People
• Molly Pitcher – carried water to men while fighting and took her husband spot when he got injured.
• Deborah Sampson – fought in many battles pretending to be a man.

• Francis Marion – a patriot known as “Swamp Fox”, he used guerilla warfare.
• John Paul Jones – naval hero privateer.
• Ethan Allen – captured British at Fort Ticonderoga without firing a shot.
• Nathan Hale – spy for the Patriots, he got caught and hung by the British.
Battles
• Lexington and Concord – first battle of the revolution. Known as the “shot heard around the world”.
• Trenton – captured the Hessians on Christmas Eve.

• Battle at Saratoga – the turning point of the Revolutionary war. It was a face to face battle where the British lost.
• Yorktown – the French helped us to make this the final battle of the revolution. It was also known as the “shot heard around the world”.
Treaty of Paris -
Great Britain surrenders and the revolution ends!!!
