How to Write an Autobiographical Essay for College Admission and Ensure Success

Success in career and life depends on success in college. The gateway to success is defined by

the autobiographical essay students must write when seeking admission to prestigious colleges.

An autobiography seems easy enough: the student simply writes about his/her life and

achievements. Thoughts are one thing, but translating them to words that convey their intended

meaning is another.

However, it is not difficult for students to learn how to write an autobiographical essay for

college. Here are a few simple guidelines that should get students started on the high road to

success.

. First, there is no defined formula because everyone’s experience is different. That said,

students can start with an outline of the most memorable events and achievements around

which to build their autobiographical essay. Put simply, this essay is their life story

according to a timeline and with a central theme. The central theme is an indicator of the

applicant’s personality, which is what the selectors want to glean.

An Asian, for example, could write about his/her background and the challenges of

studies and life in the UK, making it a focal point of the essay. He/she could go on to

write about how he/she handled challenges and his/her future aims. In short, the essay

must have an interesting start and introducing highlights as it proceeds, defining life

goals, and ending on a positive note.

• An autobiography essay must mention the most memorable moments of life and how

they served to motivate or provide lessons. These moments could be related to family, school, or

friends.

• A paragraph devoted to challenges and how the writer tackled them shows the applicant’s

problem-solving capabilities.

• Quality of intellect can be depicted by mentioning incidents or attempts to explore new

ideas and/or creative pursuits. A paragraph about hobbies and extracurricular activities helps

build a more “rounded” picture of the applicant’s personality.

• Naturally, admissions boards want to know about the student’s aspirations. A paragraph

mentioning life goals and plan to achieve those goals is vital because it will tell admissions

officers much about the writer.

• Veracity is vitally important, and the writer must also mention whether he/she is

organized and how he/she manages time and tasks. Is there a goal, a dream, a mission or a target

that he/her has been pursuing with passion for years? If so, it is worth mentioning.

• How does the writer relate with those in his/her immediate surroundings and society?

Admissions boards like to know about the student’s social skills since life and work are about

interaction.

• An essay, while stating achievements, must also be balanced by mentioning failures, how

the writer tackles such situations, and what he/she has learned.
