ANSWER:Because U.A.L says
so(and…because it is the standard,
universally accepted method of listing the sources you have used….)
Acknowledge debts to other writers.
Demonstrate the body of knowledge upon which your assignment is based.
Enable the reader(s) to locate your sources easily.
Citation
In the body of the text, you give your sources a ‘namecheck’
Example……….
“….Johnson (1963, p.12) points out that finding out how to include references in the text is only useful if you actually have some text….”
Reference List / Bibliography
Every source you have looked at (technically ‘references’ are different from a ‘bibliography’ - but in this case you could use either term, I think…)
Sources can be…..
Books, Journals, Newspapers, Websites, TV Programmes, DVDs, (any more?)
For a Book (the easiest option) You include……
AUTHOR (surname, then initials). TITLE. CITY OF PUBLICATION : PUBLISHER, DATE OF PUBLICATION.
Example
Johnson, T. Why I Hate the Harvard System. London : Thames & Hudson, 1963.
Other sources are not so straightforward….
…but as long as you bear in mind the overall ‘philosophy’ - and try to keep a consistent ‘system’ to your references - you should be OK.

For Example, an Article in a Magazine
AUTHOR(s). ‘TITLE OF ARTICLE’. NAME OF MAGAZINE. VOLUME No. : ISSUE No. DATE. PAGE NUMBERS

For Example, an Article in a Magazine
Johnson. T. ‘Referencing is Rubbish’. Education Today. Vol. 12 : Issue 5. May 1963. pp.23-30.
Website
AUTHOR / EDITOR. ‘TITLE OF SITE’. LOCATION OF SERVER : MAINTAINER OF SITE. URL (the ‘www.’ bit). DATE CREATED. DATE ACCESSED (i.e: by you…)

EXAMPLE
Johnson T. ‘Stop all this referencing nonsense now!’. Coventry : University of Warwick. www.harvardispants.co.uk. Created June 1997; accessed March 2014.
AUTHOR (surname, then initials). TITLE. CITY OF PUBLICATION : PUBLISHER, DATE
OF PUBLICATION.
So… what is the equivalent information for…
A TV Programme ?
Remember the ‘format’….
Or an Art Exhibition ?
