The History of goFLUENT

Founded in New York in 2000 by 26-year-old French entrepreneur

and banker Christophe Ferrandou, goFLUENT was born from

Christophe’s idea to find a flexible English training program

adapted to his needs and to the industry in which he was working at the time.

With the lack of such a provider, he built a solution for himself. He hired a

trainer to give him lessons over the telephone, and set up a website to share

his homework with his trainer and manage his training and progress.

Recognizing the progress he was making, he decided that this training

method would interest a wider audience and goFLUENT was therefore

created.

He chose the name goFLUENT as fluency was a critical aspect of the

communication barrier he successfully overcame with the training program

he set up.

A few months after launching goFLUENT in the United States, goFLUENT

began its international expansion, starting in Europe at the end of 2000 and

reaching Asia in 2005. By 2010, goFLUENT was present in 10 countries

in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

In January 2010, NTT Communications, the world’s third largest telecom

operator and 31st largest company (Fortune 500), acquired 29.7% of

goFLUENT Group SA.

A year later, Christophe Ferrandou was honored as one of “Europe’s top 10

e-Learning movers and shakers“ by e-Learning professionals.

Dr. Charles Browne is a Professor of Applied

Linguistics and head of the English teacher training

program at Meiji Gakuin University in Japan. He is

well-respected and widely-published expert on

experience. He is also a specialist in CALL

(Computer-Assisted Language Learning) and Second

Language Vocabulary Acquisition and has helped

guide the development of many language learning

applications for mobile devices and PCs.

Anya LeonardiagoFLUENT Director of Learning & Resources

Anya Leonardia is an educational psychologist

specializing in the interplay of cognitive and

affective learning. Her research has included

studies on the failure to learn, motivation in adult

learning, and teacher responses to difficulties in

the learning process.

She is a former university instructor of Educational

Psychology and has worked in the field of

education and instructional materials development

for over ten years.

Blended LearningCombining different training approaches to create the most efficient and relevant learning experience

goFLUENT has always put the trainer/learner relationship at

the center of its learning strategy. The goFLUENT eLearning

Language input (extensive, intensive, and analyzed) – The learner must be

appropriately exposed to the target language, and must focus on what is

comprehensible and potentially useful to him.

Language output (extensive, intensive, and analyzed) – Training must include

the direct and immediate application of new learning. Regular use of the

target language increases the learner’s motivation and confidence, and

strengthens his memory of its words and structures.

Vocabulary – Without the necessary words, a learner cannot understand or
