Rule of thirds• Took this photo whilst on holiday, took this using a method of gridding up

the photo to bring the focus onto the subject (the boat).

So as you can see here, I framed the boat to give a focal point, other practice shots are…

Rule of thirds in films

Right you can see a shot from “Walter mitty”, here you can see an amazing shot of him boarding through Iceland. The rule of thirds subtly draws your eyes to him but gives ample room for looking at the scenery around him.

You can also see head room, the less important feet are cropped out but the head is still completely visible and close to the focal point. This here shows the importance of his head.

Here you can see the rule of thirds has been Brocken. The focus is slap bang centre. But this here was done to show symmetry between the two rocks.

Article on composition

This article here just reaffirms what I have said about composition and the eye line and how I will always try to keep my actor on the right side of the frame.

Why will my production benefit from this? It draws my audiences focus into the parts of the shot I need, for example I will have to do close cropping on my actor for the initial shots of heaven as not to give away the background. I will use this for to draw my audience in so they don’t notice the background if any shows.

lighting• For my piece I know what I want, I would like a mix of CTO on one side and

CTB on the other. (colour temperature orange, colour temperature blue)

• Id like this as it adds contrast to the scene, cold vs heat, this here connotes conflict, all on a subconscious manner. I have opted for low key lighting, which will then be darkened even more with colour grading.

This here as you can see is the exact style I'm going for. It adds inner conflict to the range of emotions. Also looking into lighting I found that the use of haze makes the individual beams of light visible.

Why use lighting like I am?This here is why blue is being used for reality, as psychology dictates that it has lots of negative connotations that much my atmosphere.

Furthermore orange and yellow is being used for heaven as the it is seen to connotes friendliness and warmth, this here highly contrasts the blue.

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE• A clockwork orange. The music comes in first, which immediately sets the

tone of the opening piece. I definitely want my music to begin before the first shot, so that I can give my audience the intended emotion before we even begin to see the action. I like this opening because like mine, it tells us nothing about the film or what's to come, it instantly highlights why this isn't a traditional film and therefore entices the audience to instantly chose whether they like the protagonists or not. In terms of form the protagonists are set centre frame, this breaks the rule of third but everything is very symmetrical which means that we accept it.

The social networkOnce again the social network begins by throwing us into the midst of a film with no explanation to what is happening. Mark Zuckerberg is talking extremely fast to his girlfriend. Even though this time we are given lots of dialogue, the only thing we can work out is that the protagonist is clearly very smart. Furthermore, like a clockwork orange, the shots are still relatively long. The colour in this is more orange and therefore it sets the scene of the location being cosy, romantic or simply happy. This does contrast a clock work orange which was significantly more blue. This shows how the aim of the title sequence is to instantly portray a mood. To captivate the audience. the protagonists were kept in the right hand of the frame a lot for the rule of thirds and there still was plenty of camera movement to keep the shot interesting.

The girl with the dragon tattoo

One again a theme of not telling the audience has appeared. All we see is a sort of black liquid running up and down over things. The audience have no clue what's going on. There is lots of blues which highlight the emotion of coldness and violence that features in the film and once again most shots are positioned to the left and right of the screen.

The graduate

As is a clear reoccurring theme, the opening credits for this film tells us nothing, we mostly hear the drone of an airplane and a completely emotionless actor. He is positioned to the right of the frame so it signifies to us that he is a protagonist and very important to the piece. The colour is more orange so we can assume that he is more pleased to be going to his destination.
