IMPORTANCE OF THE COASTLINE TO PAKISTAN. • The coastline of Pakistan is of great importance.• The port of Karachi and port Qasim are located on
this coastline and handle all the sea borne trade of Pakistan.
• The coastline is important for fishing as well.• The fishing industry gives employment to a large
number of people living along the coast.• Gwadar port is being developed on the Baluchistan
coast.

The Traditional Fishing Methods• The traditional method of marine fishing is the use of sail boats
which can go only upto 5 kms in the sea.• Old type of nets are used.
• Types or species of fish which are caught• The fish caught are herring, mackerel, cod, lobsters, crabs, shrimps,

Developments in both fishing methods and fishing operations. • The modern methods include the use of motorized boats and
trawlers.• These boats can go upto 50 kms in the sea and use gill-netters. • The government has helped to develop the infrastructure at
Korangi, Karachi, Gwadar fish harbours.• Facilities for storage, packing and preservation have been
provided.• Trawlers have increased the shrimp catch which is an
important export item. • The number of motorized boats, trawlers and gill-netters have
greatly increased .

The Main Features and developments, along The Sind Coast• Sindh and Makran coasts are important fishing
grounds. • The Sindh coast is smaller, about 30% of the coast
line, but produces 70% of the marine catch. The Sindh coast is rich in fishing because it has numerous creeks and inlets. The continental shelf is broad along the Indus delta which is richer in fish food.
• Karachi has better processing and exporting facilities.• Korangi fish harbour has also been developed.

The Main Features and developments, along Makran coasts
• The Makran coast is rich in fish. Butfishermen are able to catch limited amount because of old methods.
• Pasni,Gwadar, Jiwani, Ormara and Sonmiani are important fishing ports along theMakran coast.
• Gwadar is being developed as a fishing port and the government is trying to improve the infrastructure for marine fishing.
• Storage, packing and preservation facilities are being provided.

salting and drying.• But after 1970 it has been replaced with freezing which is only
possible by ice factories.

Problems Faced By Fishing Industry• Following problems faced by fishing Industry.1) Water Pollution2) Over-fishing3) Thread to Mangroves4) Weak infrastructure5) Lack of Knowledge6) Traditional Methods
Contact for Tution on Skype Pakistan Studies O-Level/ IGCSE : [email protected]
1-Water Pollution
• Karachi is most affected area.• Waste of chemical industries caused pollution.• Toxic Materials and Heavy Materials like nickle, cadmium ete have
been found in sea animals including fish.• It also affects the rivers of Pakistan.• Thousands of fish became blinds due to water pollution.
Contact for Tution on Skype Pakistan Studies O-Level/ IGCSE : [email protected]
2-Over-fishing
• Over fishing of shrimps through out the year and even in the breeding season.
• In a long term it limits the production of shrimps.
Contact for Tution on Skype Pakistan Studies O-Level/ IGCSE : [email protected]
3-Thread to Mangroves
• They protect the coastlines from high and Low tides.• These are the abode of fish and shrimps but due to water pollution
they are decaying.
Contact for Tution on Skype Pakistan Studies O-Level/ IGCSE : [email protected]
4-Weak infrastructure
• Both in Sindh and Makran coastlines the infrastructure is poor and weak.
• It does not meet with the world standard level, as a result fishing industry shares only 0.9% of the total GDP.
Contact for Tution on Skype Pakistan Studies O-Level/ IGCSE : [email protected]
5-Lack of Knowledge
• Mostly fisher-men do not have proper knowledge about the fish and fishing.
• As a result they catch low fish.
Contact for Tution on Skype Pakistan Studies O-Level/ IGCSE : [email protected]
6-Traditional Methods
• These are the main hurdle in the way to maximize the fish quantity.
Contact for Tution on Skype Pakistan Studies O-Level/ IGCSE : [email protected]
• In inland areas of Pakistan, fish farming has expanded during recent years. Explain why this expansion has taken place?
• Describe the traditional fishing methods and give examples of the types or species of fish which are caught.
