Moving Out…Finding a place to live can be an intimidating task, particularly for the first-time renter. Whether the prospective renter has just graduated from college or is moving out of a parent’s house, here are four tips from Stephan Arms Apartments to help ease the transition.
1. Stay Within a BudgetCreate a budget for living expenses setting forth the preferred and maximum monthly expenditures. New renters must factor the security deposit amount into the first month’s rent and budget accordingly.
2. Consider the UtilitiesEven if the monthly rent is affordable, the added expense of utilities must be included in the budget. Ask if utilities are included in the rent, and if they are not, obtain an estimate from utility companies or prior residents for what the average monthly bills will be.
3. Reflect on LocationThe apartment has a pool, a workout room, and free snacks, but do those amenities make the 45-minute commute to work worth it? It is a good idea to set location parameters to narrow the apartment search.
4. Determine PrioritiesMake a firm “wish list” before beginning an apartment search. Whether the renter values apartment size, included amenities, parking facilities, or pet policies, those priorities will make the difference between a signed lease and “just looking.”
