For question 3, we created a focus group to show people our media product, where they then answered questions regarding the music video. 1. Do you understand the concept of the narrative? When asking our focus group whether they understood the narrative of our media product, we had a mix of responses. Majority of the people said how they understood the narrative to the video, expanding to this explaining how they can gather the idea of the young girl has gotten herself involved with a bad crowd. People also said how it was clear that these young adults were developing a party or hedonistic lifestyle, whereas the main protagonist isn’t quite sure what to do about the situations that her friend is putting her through. The focus group told us that the narrative of the video fits well with the lyrics of the song, and they could understand how we have represented the indie genre, with the characters, but also the way that the narrative is not straightforward, due to the cross cuts in between scenes. Although the majority of the responses were positive about the narrative, the focus group gave us tips on how we could have improved our media product. Members of the focus group suggested that we could possibly add more performance clips, however some people suggested that the narrative was not as clear as it could be, as they were left confused as to what the main protagonist was suffering with, due to the words such as ‘pain’ in the bath. 2. Was you able to follow the narrative from beginning to the end? When asking our focus group whether the narrative was easy to follow, majority of the people asked explained how they could understand the narrative throughout the music video, which they were kept interested and the clear narrative grasped their attention. The narrative was described with words such as ‘enthralling,’ and representative of the indie genre, and although one person said it wasn’t necessarily straightforward, due to the cross cuts, it wasn’t a bad thing as it was a good representation towards the indie genre.

3. What attracted you most to the video?

As a third question, we asked our focus group what attracted them the most to the music video. The overall style to our music video was engaging for our viewers as they found the indie style to the video interesting. Another main theme in our music video which attracted the viewers was the editing techniques which we have used. Our focus group commented on the effects of our video, and the way that certain clips had been placed together to fit in time with the song. The footage was also commented on, being described as ‘strong conteptually,’ and the footage in the nightclub being described as ‘holding a pleasing aesthetic.’

4. When we questioned the focus group on whether or not the video represented the alternative/indie genre one of the member’s stated the video well represented the music genre well through the use of character and mise en scene while the others stated it was due to the construction of narrative typical conventions of the alternative/indie music videos. The feedback from all five members were taken into account and established that the audience understood the narrative and what genre the video was which we wanted from the start of production.

5. for this question focused on what can be improved to the music video how it can more successful to

attract wider audiences. When collecting the feedback back three out of five members of the focus group stated nothing need to be changed all to fill in the minor gaps which we had taken into account and we filled the missing footage to make the video complete, however two member’s stated that they wanted more performance in the video, however even though these comments were taken into account the purpose of the video was to create a narrative as we wasn’t focused on creating a performance based video so we didn’t feel like adding more footage to the video, we did include some performance clips of the artist but they were part of the narrative.

To conclude, we are happy with the overall feedback from the focus group, as we gathered mixed opinions that we took into account. This allowed us

to improve our video by questioning people of our target audience. According the people asked we successfully constructed a narrative enigma through character, mise en scene and editing. Even though some didn’t grasp the narrative, this was our intention to create a fragmented music video.
