I Have Learnt - Photos
From first doing the preliminary task and then creating the
magazine, I have learnt how to take professional looking images.
The front cover image for the College Magazine was taken in a
normal setting, I learnt from this that the images would have
turned out better if I had taken them in a professional setting. I
also learnt from taking the photos for the college magazine that it
is important to look at the whole surroundings of images because in
the college magazine front cover image there is food packaging on
the table. For the images in the College magazine, I didnt know
about all the camera settings like shutter speed, whereas by the
time I took the images for my magazine I learnt about how to use a
camera properly. This meant that the photos which I took for my
magazine ended up looking more professional.
What I Have Learnt - Layout
Since creating the college magazine, I have learnt how to
properly layout a magazine. In the college magazine layout the
cover lines go across the image and this isnt a very good layout as
you cannot see the image and because you cannot read some of the
font as the colour of the font matches the image background. I have
also learn that you need to make it clear which cover line is for
the main article in the magazine. On the college magazine, the main
cover line wasnt obvious as it was the same colour as the other
cover lines. I also learn that typical magazine conventions is to
have the other cover lines on the outside of the magazine on the
left hand side. This is why most of the other cover lines on my
magazine are on the left side whereas in the college magazine the
other cover lines were all over the place.
What I Have Learnt - Fonts
I have learnt that there are ways of using other more
interesting font since the college magazine creation. I learnt
about the website dafont and used this on my music magazine to have
more interesting fonts rather that just plain and boring fonts. I
have also learnt since the college magazine to be careful what the
colour of the font is, as on the college magazine some of the font
due to its colour fades into the background so you can no longer
see it. On my music magazine I made sure that I no longer had this
problem so that you could clearly read all of the font.
What I Have Learnt Photoshop
Since creating the college magazine, I have learnt how to
properly use Photoshop. I have learnt to use the quick selection
tool, which enabled me to cut images out of the background on
Photoshop and put them onto another background. If I had this skill
before during the college magazine task I would have cut the girl
and the table out of the rest of the image and put it onto another
colour background. Another tool which I learnt whilst doing the
music magazine was the eyedropper tool. This let me pick a colour
from an image or a font and use it consistently throughout the
product. Another tool which I have learnt about during the process
of creating the music magazine is the ruler tool. This helped me
set things out so that they were all at the same distance. Another
tool which I have learnt about it the special effect tools which
allows you to add a drop shadow and outer glow. I used this and
added drop shadows and outer glows to text in the music magazine to
make the font stand out, if I had of learnt this whilst making the
college magazine I would have used a drop shadow and outer glow on
the text to make the text stand out from the background.
Other Thing I Have Learnt
I learnt throughout the process that it is a good idea to ask
other people what they think about your work because most of the
time they can provide areas for improvement which you wouldnt have
thought about.
I have also learnt that it is important to proof read the
products as, when I hadnt proof read the products there were
spelling and grammar mistake all the way across the three
products.
I also learnt that it is important to pay attention to little
details such as colours since sometimes the colour can be a
different colour to another one on the page when you want something
to be the same colour. Its also important that you pay attention to
details to avoid making mistakes.
