OUR ISLANDA trip to Sicily represents a unique and unforgettable experience. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean sea, famous for its warm summer and mild winter. The island as been controlled at various times by the Spanish, the Normans, the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantine and the French. Each of them had a great influence on the architecture, language and cuisine. For this reason theres no other place on earth like it. Visiting Sicily is like visiting over a dozen countries in one.The capital of Sicily is Palermo.

PALERMOThe Cathedral of Palermo was erected in 1185 by Archbishop Gualtiero Offamilio. It was modified, with additions, alterations and restorations between XV and XVI centuries. The Church is dedicated to Assumption of Virgin Mary. Saint Rosalia is the patroness of the city to whom is dedicated the Meridional Chapel. The Cathedral is characterized by the presence of different styles.

Cathedral of Palermo

This theatre was projected by Giuseppe Almeyda, completed in 1874. It is in neoclassical style, it illuminates the square; its role in Palermo is central to social life. Politeama Theatre

The theatre Massimo Vittorio Emanuele is one of the largest of Europe. It was built by Giovan Battista Filippo Basile in 1875 and terminated by his son Ernesto Basile. The exterior is in the high neoclassical style incorporating elements of the Greek temples.Massimo Theatre

The square includes the Palazzo Senatorio called Palace of the Eagle, the church is of Saint Catherine and other prestigious palaces. Pretoria fountain is one of the most beautiful fountains in Italy, takes up the entire centre of the square. The fountain was created for the Medici family, to embellish a Florentine villa. But it was bought by the Senate of Palermo and transported to Sicily. It was called the fountain of shame for numerous nude figures. Pretoria Square

TRAPANI

The church was built by Alfonso il Magnanimo in 1421, it was cathedral of Trapani in 1844.Saint Laurences Cathedral

Ligny towerIt was built in 1671 during the Spanish domination of Sicily.

AGRIGENTO

This is an archaeological site built on Hellenic period; since 1997 it is UNESCO heritage.Valley of the Temples

This is a rockface that rises above the sea, along the coast of Realmonte. Scala dei Turchi

CALTANISSETTA

It was built between 1620-1750.The Cathedral

Triton FountainIt is in Garibaldi square in front of the Cathedral; it was built by Michele Tripisciano in 1956.

ENNA

It was built in 1307, it was ordered by Federico II dAragonas wife. It become UNESCO heritage in 2008.The Cathedral

It is an imposing fortress that stands on the highest point of the city. It was built between 1130-1250.Lombardia Castle

RAGUSA

It was built between 1739-1775 by Rosario Garibaldi.Saint Georges Cathedral

It was built between 1777-1964 by two Master Builders Giuseppe Recupero and Giovanni Arcidiacono.Saint John the Baptists Cathedral

SIRACUSA

Initially it was a temple dedicated to Athena, then it became a church with the advent of Christianity.Cathedral of the Nativity of Blessed Mary

MESSINA

On the 2 October 1835 Ferdinando II of Borbone ordered the building of a new theatre , accepting the demands of the inhabitants who werent satisfied of the old theatre . It was open 12 January 1852 for Ferdinandos II birthday.Vittorio Emanuele Theatre

LOCAL FOOD

They are fried stuffed rice balls. Inside them there are usually meat, peas, mozzarella and ham. There are many variations.Sicilian Arancini

Bread and Panelle is a famous street food. They are Sicilian fritters made of chicken peas flour, served in a sandwich with lemon.Bread and Panelle

It is a traditional pizza from Palermo, with simple and genuine ingredients: tomato sauce, onions, anchovies, Caciocavallo cheese, breadcrumbs, olive oil, salt and pepper.Sfincione

It is a typical Sicilian baked pasta with: tomato sauce, meat, onions, carrots, peas and eggplant.Timballo

It is one of the most classic desserts from Sicily. Cannoli consist of tube-shaped shell fried containing ricotta and decorated with chocolate and candied citrus peel.Cannoli
