Learning Objects are online! Miriam Hannig (University of Augsburg)
The consortium of the EHISTO-project is happy to announce that the transnational
Learning Objects focused on intercultural and media-critical matters are now
available online!
The six EHISTO-project-partners from Spain, England, Sweden, Poland and Ger-
many have worked together to create twelve motivating Learning Objects with
interactive elements on the two European History Crossroads (EHC) “Columbus
and the ‘Discovery’ of the ‘New World’” and ”The ‘outbreak’ of World War One”.
At first, the EHISTO-partners found out the basic tendencies of the national views
on the topics analysing schoolbooks. Then they chose two popular history maga-
zines for each EHC. For the analysis they used front pages, indexes, editorials,
photo series and articles. These documents are the basis for the creation of teach-
ing-material which opens an European reflection for the chosen topic using a multi
-perspective and comparative approach that in the same time supports intercultur-
al and media-critical competences. Generally it`s the didactical goal of the Learn-
ing Objects that the learners detect communalities as well as differences compar-
ing the national historical cultures in Europe and by that verge to the transnational
European culture of history. This shall raise the learners’ awareness for others

than the well-known national point of view on relevant Euro-
pean historical events and shall initiate a step towards
awareness, recognition and understanding of the ”others”.
The change of the perspective and the understanding of oth-
er European nations are practised using the depictions of the
popular history magazines: the material that has been trans-
lated in the languages of the project partners can be directly
used for bilingual and bilateral comparisons in the classroom.
By doing this, multi-perspective learning will develop and
learners will be able to verge the challenges of the European
shared history.
To allow teachers and pupils from different European count-
ries to work with the concept of ”European History Cross-
roads” each Learning Object is provided with:
a brief outline of the tendencies which influence the to-
pic’s presentation in the relevant national history books;
experts from the countries in question wrote these texts,
which serve to unravel any tendencies in the chosen
magazine articles and make them understandable in the
national contexts.
possible tasks:
for critical thinking about the chosen national magazi-
ne articles, in terms of contents and media features
for a bilateral, international comparison with the
focus on ”media criticism”
for a bilateral, international comparison with the
focus on ”transnational and intercultural historical
learning”
additional material.
There is a national and a bilateral access to each EHC. In the
same time, the Learning Objects allow teachers and students
in every country involved to carry out as many comparative
studies as they want to – in transnational, media-critical and
intercultural ways. They can choose freely which national
perspectives they wish to compare. A ”multi-perspective”
learning space emerges, in which they can explore Europe’s
”shared history” by comparing national magazines and
schoolbooks. The material provided by EHISTO is especially
suitable for project-based learning and learning in combined
subjects.
The Learning Objects presented were created for different
sets of age:
While the topic ”Columbus” was created for pupils aged 12 to
14 years, the tasks on ”The ‘outbreak‘ of World War One”
cater roughly to students aged 14 to 16 years.
Since EHISTO is an European project, it is not possible to go
into particulars about all the different national educational
systems. Therefore the learning materials presented are not
created for each and every history classroom in Europe.
Rather the tasks should serve as suggestions for teachers in
order to create their own questions and targets creatively for
their lessons. Furthermore, the suggestions should motivate
teachers to develop and use their own ideas based on the
EHC-materials.
For all material free access is granted on the website of the
project:

Second EHISTO-project meeting from 27 - 30 October 2013 in Łódź From 27 – 30 October 2013 the project partners of the EU-project "European History Crossroads as Pathways to Intercultural and Media Education" (EHISTO) met upon the invitation from the Augsburg-based project coordinator Prof. Dr. Susanne Popp (Chair of History Didactics) for the second project meeting in Łódź, Poland. Joanna Szczecińska M.A. from the Academy of Management Łódź hosted the meeting. In addition to the researchers mentioned above further researchers from the University of Salamanca (Spain), the University of Dalarna (Sweden), the University of East Anglia (UK) as well as the Institute for Film and Pictures in Science and Education, Germany (FWU) in Grünwald are also involved in the project. In particular it is worthy to point out that the partner schools' teachers also attended the meeting.
Objectives
The EHISTO-project's object of research are popular history magazines, which deal with the two "European History Crossroads" agreed upon at the kick-off meeting, namely "Columbus and the 'Discovery' of the 'New World'" and "The 'outbreak' of World War One". This commercialised form of representing history is supposed to exhibit national tendencies of looking at history in the respective countries, but also transnational commonalities. Both aspects together form the foundation required to initiate intercultural and media-critical learning in history education.
Digital Learning Objects with great practical relevance for history education in schools
During the conference digital Learning Objects were presented, which were devel-oped by the individual academic experts in close collaboration with the respective teachers of the EHISTO partner schools. For this purpose, every partner country developed one module each for the "European History Crossroad" "Columbus" and for "The ‘outbreak’ of the World War One". The Institute for Film and Pictures in Sci-ence and Education, Germany (FWU) took on the technical implementation thereby ensuring attractive tasks with interactive opportunities. Subsequently, the teachers examined the modules critically before testing them in their respective classes. Aligned with their individual curriculums the teachers collectively developed two
4
EHISTO Newsletter #2
transnational units each, which successfully complemented the tasks focusing on "national perspective", "media-critical analysis" as well as "international comparison". In communi-cating with the teachers it became clear that the didactical value of the learning portfolio lies in the tasks which are avail-able in Polish, German, Spanish, Swedish and English. It is also very important that the national magazines (magazine articles, covers and picture galleries) are available in all part-ner languages and that the translations appear in the original layout. Intercultural, transnational and media-critical learning in history education can be aimed at in the best way only if these large efforts are fulfilled.
University seminars – sustainable im-plementation the EHISTO-project in university education
The following conference day was devoted to the implemen-tation of intercultural, transnational and media-critical history education by means of popular history magazines within the university training of history teachers. For this purpose, the Chair of History Didactics at Augsburg University (Prof. Dr. Susanne Popp and Miriam Hannig) has developed a semi-nar, which was piloted and evaluated in Augsburg during the winter term 2013/2014. It particularly focuses on:
a) developing critical competences in dealing with popular history magazines
b) magazine analysis (with the help of history didactical criteria)
c) enabling the students to independently develop competence-oriented tasks.
This should help the students to integrate further "European History Crossroads" in their history lessons by means of pop-ular history magazines.
The other university project partners also implemented and evaluated the proposed concept with their students. After including the gained feedback in the seminar manual it will be available as free download on the project homepage.
Teacher training – sustainable implementa-tion the EHISTO-project in schools
The concept of teacher training is the third key topic of the EHISTO-project besides the development of Learning Ob-jects and the concept of the university seminar. According-ly, researchers primarily from Salamanca University (Spain) developed a manual which, much as the university seminar manual, is available as free download on the project home-page. In addition to the actual organisational outline of the teacher training the manual also features working material
and a comprehensive bibliography, which encourages in depth engagement with the topic. As is the case with the Learning Objects and the university seminar, all documents for the teacher training are available in all project lan-guages.
Evaluation and dissemination
The evaluation of the individual key areas – reaching from Learning Objects to the university seminar to teacher training – played a great role in Łódź. The researchers of the Acade-my of Management Łódź presented the evaluation sheets which are to be used for feedback. The evaluation results of the manuals and modules will contribute to improvement. The researchers from the University of East Anglia will focus on the university seminar and the researchers from the Uni-versity of Dalarna on the concept of teacher training.
This ensures the practical relevance of the EHISTO results for all participating countries, the European relevance of the created documents and learning assignments as well as their integration into national curricula, training concepts and study regulations.
Prospects
During the following months the Learning Objects and the concept of the university seminar, but also the manual for teacher training presented at the conference were tested, evaluated and subsequently improved by the project part-ners. In May 2014 the final versions were presented at the third meeting of the EHISTO-project in Salamanca, Spain. The report of the Salamanca meeting will follow in the next newsletter.
Until 2014 the EHISTO-project is funded by the European Union as part of the "Lifelong Learning Programme" (LLP) with an amount of roughly 300.000 Euro.

EHISTO-project in
TEEM 2013 Conference
The Research GRoup in InterAction and eLearning (GRIAL,
http://grial.usal.es), in collaboration with the Research Institu-
te of Educational Sciences (http://iuce.usal.es), held the First
International Conference on Technological Ecosystems for
Enhancing Multiculturality (TEEM 2013, http://
teemconference.eu) at the University of Salamanca, from
November 14th to 16th, 2013.
The main aim of this event was the research, discussion and
generation of new approaches regarding learning as a key
element for the Knowledge Society. This involved the deve-
lopment of several thematic areas or “tracks” for facing multi-
culturality from different perspectives, including:
- Education Assessment and Orientation
- Human-Computer Interaction
- eLearning
- Computers in Education
- Communication Media and Education
- Medicine and Education
- Robotics in Education
- Engineering and Education
- Information Society and Education
The Conference promoted also a fruitful space for presenting
and discussing different projects related to the topics invol-
ved within the meeting. During the November 16th session,
Valentina Zangrando, from the University of Salamanca and
Researcher of EHISTO-project, presented EHISTO-project
as a milestone for gaining multicultural and media critical
approaches in education, particularly in teaching and learning
History in the Secondary School level.
The conference has been transmitted via web streaming. The
video recording of the presentations and the proceedings are
available at http://teemconference.eu.
Katja Gorbahn is EHISTO consul-
tant based in Denmark. She cur-
rently holds a post as assistant
professor at the Institute for Aes-
thetics and Communications at
Aarhus University and specializes
in didactics of history. Her re-
search interests include identity in
history teaching, history in popular
culture and textbook analysis. Cur-
rently, she is working on the repre-
sentation of the Second World
War in popular culture and history
teaching. Focusing on Germany and Denmark, this research
project comprises the analysis of popular history magazines.
“I find the EHISTO project extremely exciting. Its trans-
national perspective offers great opportunities to overcome a
national bias in history teaching, which is of special relevance
in the current European crisis. In general, popular history
magazines are a very interesting medium. Comparing them
with school textbooks offers deeper insights in the character
of popular history culture, respectively history teaching. Dis-
cussing the magazines' intersections and interactions with
other media can contribute to a richer understanding of inter-
mediality in history culture. Analyzing texts from popular his-
tory magazines can strengthen the students' competences of
critical understanding. Therefore, it is my conviction that both
pupils and teachers can profit substantially from working with
history magazines. Personally, I am glad about the opportuni-
ty to take part in this project and to get a deeper insight in the
history cultures and history teaching practices of the coun-
tries participating.”

EHISTO partner: FWU - Institute for Film and
Pictures in Science and Education, Germany
Susanne Friz (FWU)
FWU (Institute for Film and Pic-
tures in Science and Education) is
Germany’s leading producer of
audiovisual, didactic, and interac-
tive media for schools. It was
founded in 1950 as a non-profit
corporation with the 16 German
"Länder" (federal states) as share-
holders.
FWU produces educational films, didactic DVDs and learning software as well as
internet applications. It was the first producer of educational DVDs in Germany,
making didactic use of new picture, audio and scene selection features which are
part of the DVD standard. It keeps on stock approximately 2.200 titles for almost
all school subjects and cross-area topics, as well as fictional movies for children
and young people. All productions are accompanied by comprehensive hand-
books for teachers and educators. Every year about 60-65 new titles are distribu-
ted. To make it easier for schools in using the media in the classroom, FWU has
produced its own media portal (www.fwu-mediathek.de) with 4.400 online media
including sequences, pictures, animations/simulations and worksheets. Students
and teachers can either work online with the media or can download them.
Apart from the production of media it is a major objective for FWU to provide inde-
pendent information and consultancy on all pedagogical and technical questions
regarding educational media, both on linear and interactive concepts and the use
of telecommunication for learning. FWU therefore provides new services to the
federal states in Germany concerning media-pedagogic issues, the electronic dis-
tribution of media to schools directly and the start-up and operation of media-
platforms. The technical and organisational possibilities have been tested in the
past in projects and have now been applied to the constant use.
FWU was chosen in 1999 to co-ordinate different educational servers and estab-
lish a common internet portal for resource locators and school information. This
includes integrated catalogues of any type of resources, on-line and off-line. FWU
is co-founder of the German Eduserver (Deutscher Bildungsserver/DBS; http://
www.eduserver.de/) and - since 2001 - is responsible for the content of the sector
”school”. The DBS contains about 30,000 educational metadata records, linking to
external resources, e.g. on school servers. The metadata is stored conforming to
Dublin Core. Links can be suggested to editors by teachers.
FWU is co-ordinator of several national projects and programmes and a service
centre for public and private institutions. FWU is en-
gaged in national and international pilot projects on
media-pedagogic issues. Current emphasis lies on dy-
namic navigation techniques for supporting learning and
teaching as a process. It is co-coordinator of several
national projects or programmes and was partner of
some EU projects (Eurodelphes, MDE, ETB, Scalex,
eCOLOURS, EdReNe, MELT, ASPECT, EHISTO).

We have been very pleased as a department to be involved
in the EHISTO-project. We all feel that popular history maga-
zines have the potential to improve history teaching in a
range of ways, but it is quite challenging to think how best to
make use of them with pupils of different ages and abilities,
given the length and quite difficult reading levels of the most
popular history magazines in the UK (BBC History Magazine
and History Today). Involvement in the project has also made
us realise that as a department, we have not perhaps made
as much use of history magazine articles as we might have
done.
The Łódź seminar was an excellent opportunity to develop
our ideas about the use of popular history magazines. As well
as the chance to get to see something of Łódź (which was
really interesting), it was great to get the chance to talk to
teachers from other countries who face the same teaching
challenges. In England, teachers get very little opportunity to
meet up with colleagues form other schools, so this was a
rare treat, not least because we were able to discuss the dif-
ferences in history teaching across the countries involved.
The chance to compare accounts of the causes of World War
One from different European countries, as represented in
popular history magazines, is particularly valuable, given the
centenary of this event next year. We should add that the
project is an excellent example of the potential of such Euro-
pean collaborations to improve educational outcomes. We
also feel that we met a lot of very nice people.

Workpackage 6: Piloting and finalizing teaching material
and teacher manuals
The Universidad de Salamanca (Spain), as responsible work-
package (WP) leader, coordinates the practical applications of
the results of the already designed Learning Objects. In each
partner country pilot schools implemented and piloted the
material in history classes. To ensure a close and effective
cooperation between researchers and schools, the EHISTO-
teachers took part at the meeting in Łódź (Poland). Informed
about the overall idea of EHISTO and equipped with ideas
about the implementation and the piloting process, the teach-
ers tested the Learning Objects with their classes before they
processed questionnaires, which were collected and summa-
rized by the Spanish WP-leader. The feedback from pupils
and teachers were implemented in the online Learning Ob-
jects in order to provide the highest possible user-friendliness.
Workpackage 7: Piloting and finalizing module and guide
for initial teacher training
All partners working in the field of academic teacher training
implemented the initial teacher training according to the mo-
dule handbook in their academic teaching in the winter term
2013/14. The training was evaluated using questionnaires
developed by the Polish Academy of Łódź. The experiences
gained in the piloting phase were collected and turned into a
report. The partners exchanged experiences and discussed
changes concerning the structure of the module or the content
of the module handbook. The University of East Anglia, as
WP-leader, added the changes to the handbook, which will be
available as an online download in all project languages. The
internal project presentation took place during the third mee-
ting in Salamanca (Spain) in month 21.
Workpackage 8: Piloting and finalizing teaching material
and teacher manuals
In Germany, Sweden, England, Poland and Spain, an one to
two day lasting in-service teacher training was offered at the
Universities. During this “EHISTO”-training seminar, the hand-
book from WP 5 has been tested. Similar to WP 6 and 7, WP
8 was evaluated using special questionnaires, which were
designed by the Polish EHISTO-team. Based on these re-
sults, the researchers of the Swedish University edited the in-
service teacher training, which were presented – as final ver-
sion – at the third meeting in Salamanca (Spain).
Announcement: Final meeting and presentation of the
results
The coordinators and all partners of the EHISTO-project are
really pleased to announce that the final EHISTO-conference
is linked to the annual conference of the International Society
For History Didactics (ISHD)! With the topic “history and edu-
tainment” – a combination of education and entertainment –
great synergies can be exploited. The EHISTO-final confer-
ence will host two panels, which will contribute lectures with
the thematic focus of:
1) the state of the art of research on popular history maga-
zines as a part of “history edutainment world” – with spe-
cial focus on transnational and intercultural comparative
perspectives
2) learning opportunities and empirical research results
about the usability of popular history magazines in the
history classroom.
Both panels will present research results directly out of the
EHISTO-project.
Within the most important international conference in the field
of history didactics, the EHISTO-consortium is proud to pre-
sent their outcomes and to make EHISTO even more interna-
tionally well-known. Furthermore, a final publication will in-
clude the results of the European EHISTO-project to reach
sustainability and to provide connecting factors for further
projects.
The EHISTO-final conference will take place in Wroclaw,
Poland, from 9th to 11th of September 2014.
