• Spaarnestad Photo and the Nationaal Archief have entered into a cooperation in order to preserve the photo collection of Spaarnestad Photo.

• The Spaarnestad Photo collection comprises over 12 million photos

• The Nationaal Archief photocollection comprises more than 3 million photos

• Together the collections form the visual heritage of the 20th century.

• The Netherlands always was an important market for foreign photographers.

• Most of the archives from publishers, magazines, newspapers and photopress agencies ended up with Spaarnestad Photo and form a very unique archive and very rich source for publications, research, etc.

• Spaarnestad Photo always depended on the sale of publication rights in the Netherlands

• The archive has increased from 2 to 12 million images• Because of the size and costs, it was impossible for a

private foundation to maintain the archive.• Spaarnestad Photo needed to solve the problem of lack

of sources

• The Nationaal Archief acknowledged the importance of the archive and it has been valued as a part of the visual Dutch cultural heritage

• The Nationaal Archief took over the archive.• Spaarnestad Photo kept the exclusive rights on

the exploitation of the publication rights.• Profits made with the sales of the

publicationrights will be invested in the preservation of the collection

• With this solution both organizations benefit from each others expertise.
