An orphan boy carrying a drinking water bag on his shoulder was serving water to thousands of people assembled for a

peaceful meeting in the hot Sun

Suddenly there was heavy firing killing over 1000 people

The event turned him to the path of revolution

Udham Singh, a revolutionary nationalist,

Born as Sher Singh on 26 December 1899, at Sunam in Patiala

His father Tahal Singh was a watchman on a railway crossing

Lost his parents before he was seven

Admitted to Central Khalsa orphanage at Amritsar and named Udham Singh

Went to USA and learnt militant activities from Babar Akalis in the early 1920's andreturned home with revolvers

Arrested and imprisoned for four years

After release in 1931,opened a shop as a signboard painter

Deeply influenced by Bhagat Singh (referred to him as his guru)

Singing political songs of Ram Prasad Bismal, the revolutionary poet

Looking out for an opportunity to avenge the Jalliavala Bagh tragedy went to England

On 13 March 1940 at 4.30 p.m in Caxton Hall, London fired five to six shots at Sir Michael O'Dwyer, who was governor of the Punjab when the Amritsar massacre had taken place (in a meeting of the East India Association and the Royal Central Asian Society)

Sir Michael O'Dwyer was dead and Lord Zetland, the Secretary of State for India, who was presiding over the meeting was injured

He made no attempt to escape and continued saying that he had done his duty

On 4 June 1940, Justice Atkinson of Central Criminal Court, Old Bailey sentenced him to death

On 31 July 1940, Udham Singh was hanged in Pentonville Prison in London
