PRESIDENT’S REPORT Including Gardening
BELLINGER HEALTH ACTION GROUP Inc. 2016/2017 AGM 26th July 2017 Thank you I wish to thank the outgoing committee who have once again done a stellar job this past year: Fenella Briscomb (Secretary & Public Officer), John Conway (Treasurer), Pauline Murphy (Vice-President & Chief Fundraiser) & non- executive members, Shirley Dunne, Charlotte Blesing & Marlene Howes. My special thanks also go to Dr’s Olivia & Derek Bell our consultant VMO’s who have (without breaching confidentiality) provided us with invaluable updates of Bellingen Hospital. This is a team effort & without their support BHAG could not function. I would also like to acknowledge & thank the silent volunteers who regularly garden at the hospital – Fenella Briscomb, Shirley Dunne, Marlene Howes, Daniel Flesch, Russell Atkinson & Margaret Hooper and Phornthip & Greg Hawke who continue to maintain their special project at the hospital in the Wellness Garden. Bellingen Hospital now relies on their volunteer work. Everyone’s commitment to BHAG & its core role in our community has been one of dedication & focus – “It’s all about preserving our local hospital in Bellingen & the Public Health Services it provides by all means possible”. Your Committee Our previous AGM was held on the 27th July 2016
Your Committee agreed to continue holding Quarterly Meetings & met on the 7/9/2016, 14/12/2016, 8/3/2017 & 7/6/2017.
• This past year has been a year of consolidating the Chief Executive Health District’s position on ‘Donated Equipment’ with a draft document from the Chief Executive under review.
• The Gardening Group continued to maintain all the gardens with assistance from hospital maintenance staff. We had a failed attempt to work on the main reception area pending capital works. Works have commenced on the Café & we protected our garden areas with isolation tape & the temporary removal of some plants.
• We continued to monitor Health Services at Bellingen Hospital, in particular the M.O. Roster for A&E & the ‘open/closed bed’ situation in the Sub-Acute ward.
Governance In late 2016 the Department of Fair Trading changed some regulations and fees for Incorporated Organisations to reduce the workload of these volunteer based organisations and reduce the fee burden. We updated our records and files to comply with the changes where the Public Officer is now:
• The registered address • To hold all the books including financial records (The treasurer may hold the current year but must
hand over all records at the next AGM) Reflecting on “Life after 2009”
In 2009 we fought the threatened closure of our hospital In 2010 we commenced volunteer gardening - THEN

New bathrooms in Hewitt block and Floor coverings replaced.
AND LOOK WHERE WE ARE TODAY Bellingen Hospital services & upgrades continue at ‘V-8’ speed
1. Surgery lists as at Sept 2016 – now 3 days/week 2. A draft master plan for the hospital exists however due to budget restrictions it has not been
implemented. Many other capital works are being undertaken from other funding sources. 3. Café work has commenced in the void under the Sub-Acute ward (August completion). 4. The LPG tank has a new mesh fence, extension of the concrete slab apron & armour rail installed 5. The main carpark is to be upgraded including improvements to the road access to reception and A&E 6. The hospital is installing Solar Power & external lighting on our new roof. 7. 4 more beds have now been opened in Sub-Acute ward increasing palliative care services (total of 12
beds now with 3-4 beds for rehabilitation) 8. The Pharmacy hours have been increased from 2 days to 3 days/week 9. PLUS……….
Café view from Gazebo Café entrance LPG tank perimeter upgrade works BHAG has a relaxed year
• With no current threats to our hospital services and our major landscaping projects behind us we have maintained our active presence during our volunteer gardening bee’s.
• BHAG & our community remain highly respected by the Health Network who knows that we will ‘pounce’ at a moment’s notice should any unacceptable situation arise.
• We attended the annual ‘Volunteers morning tea’ in March Gardening Report & seasonal photos *Since the 20th July 2010 BHAG has volunteered 2,490 Hrs of gardening* BHAG gardening volunteers continued to maintain the gardens they created & restored with ongoing ‘Weeding, Mulching, Pruning & New Plantings’ During the level 3 water restrictions we were given an exemption by Council to extend the watering times during the long dry Spring/Summer Due to our rigorous practice of mulching and choosing appropriate species we had no loss of life

Frog pond area is lush, green & flowering Gazebo garden is blooming with colour and growth
A new succulent flower excites us
Autumn rain arrives & it cools down With the seasonal change we moved out of survival mode into preparing a new area with weeding. An old Grevillea Royal Mantle finally died & we replaced the steep bank with Lomandra Longifolia. We transferred some Bromeliad out of the sun into a shady area.
Lomandra Longifolia planted Old Honeysuckle bank weeded Brom’s relocated to shade
