Case study-landslide in Bangladesh on 27th June 2012

Heavy rains causing multiple landslides killed at least 110 people in the districts of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazaar and

Bandarban in Bangladesh.

Rescuers found the dead bodies and pulled them from the mud and debris of destroyed homes.

The main reason for the occurrence of landslides was continuous rainfall which was then followed by floods and so, due to soil erosion the disaster took place.

At least 150,000 people have also been stranded by the floods, officials said.The government tried to protect the people

of Bangladesh in many ways but the death toll reached to 110 in number.

Landslide mitigation

Landslide mitigation refers to lessening the effect of landslides by constructing various man made projects at slopes vulnerable to  In addition to shallow erosion or reduction of sheer strength caused by seasonal rainfall, causes triggered by anthropic activities such as adding excessive weight above the slope, digging at mid-slope or at the foot of the slope, can also be included.

Rescue operations were continued but rain was hampering efforts. Flights to Chittagong airport were also cancelled.

Those killed were drowned in flash floods, hit by landslides, struck by lightning or buried by wall collapses.

Many homeless people who lived at the foot of the hills or close to them despite warnings from the authorities about the danger of landslides did not leave their place and so, got killed under the masses of land that slided.

Volunteers using loudspeakers warned people about the danger of heavy rainfall and landslides in Cox's Bazaar, officials say, but local people and rescuers were still left helpless when floodwater suddenly inundated dozens of villages and severely disrupted communications.

In neighbouring Bandarban district, bodies have been recovered from multiple landslide sites, local officials have said.

Bandarban police chief Saiful Ahmed told the AFP news agency that most of the victims were asleep when huge waves of mud and debris buried them alive.

"One family has lost 12 members," Mr. Ahmed said.

Chittagong has been hit repeatedly by monsoon rain and landslides in recent years. As a result, the government has tried to tighten rules on where development can take place but with little success.

Retention walls need to be built in landslides areas in Bangladesh, otherwise every time a landslide occurs, loss of life will be seen.
