Instructions for ReadingTarget 1 – to identify words independently
1. Find somewhere quiet and comfortable.
2. Children read words to you. Give support.
3. Repeat every day, until your child can identify all words independently.
4. Lots of praise!

1. Using a timer ask your child to read the words as fast as they can.
2. The target time is 20 seconds.3. Use ‘Dinosaur Trail Time Sheet’ to record time
achieved.4. Repeat daily.5. Once 20 seconds has been achieved record in the
‘Record of Achievement’.6. Next set of words can be started.

Instructions for spellingTarget: To write the words fluently
1. Show the cards and ask what the words says. Help them to find clues. Eg t-hat, they – he
2. Place word card on ‘spelling check sheet’. Ask child to say the word and then say each letter name in turn.
3. Shut their eyes and repeat letter names again. Repeat 3 times.
4. Turn card over and child to write word from memory. Check. Repeat 3 times.
5. Repeat daily until your child can write words fluently.6. When achieved fill in ‘Record of Achievement’ and start next
set of words.

Completing the Trail!
If spelling is slower – focus just on spelling for a while.
See how many of the words you can find in your reading book.
When a set of words has been completed children bring the ‘record of achievement’ to class teacher and are given next words.
When the ‘record of achievement’ shows that all 100 words have been learnt, a certificate is given.

Lastly …
Following assessments this term, class teachers will inform you which words children are finding ‘tricky’.
20 words is a lot to learn to spell – it is easier to try 5 at a time.
