Democracy The word democracy is derived from 2 Greek words “Demos” mean People and “crates” means government. We can say that democracy is the government of people. Where people are sovereign. Some Definitions of democracy are given below; 1) Abraham Lincon ; Government of the people, for the people, by the people. 2) Gettle; It is the form of govt where majority of the people in a country has power and authority to form government. 3) Lord Bryce; It is a form of government in which the whole society has the power and sovereignty in an independent state. 4) Seelay;

4) Seelay; If everyone in a country participates in the establishment of govt it is called Democracy.

Characteristics.1) Elections;

In present days, the elected representatives of people run the affairs and business of government. We can say that elections are the foundation stones of building of democracy.

Transparent elections are necessary for the process of democracy.

2) Political parties; The presence of at least 2 political parties is a necessary element in a democratic state.

3) Basic rights; People enjoy social, political and economic rights in democracy. It is the main duty of government to protect these rights for citizens.

4) Freedom of criticism; In a democratic system every person has the freedom of expression. He can criticize on government but he is not allowed to criticize the state dialogues and arguments use the true spirit of democracy.

5) Welfare of people; The progress of state and welfareo0f society is main objective in democracy. Government makes policies for development and progress and tries to achieve the economic goal.

6) Piece and safety; Democracy is a peaceful system of govt. Any change in govt or political setups is according to souls and regulation. Rule of law is very important for democracy.

7) Responsible government; In democratic system, government is responsible for all its actions and is also answerable before public. People can make check and balance on the performance of govt. Executive is also answerable for govt.

8) Symbol of human dignity;

In democracy, people enjoy the freedom of expression to criticize on govt and make their own opinion without any pressure. Therefore, we can say that it is a symbol of human dignity.

8) Political training; People get opportunity to participate in the affairs of govt. They take interests in social and political problems. In this way they get political awareness at the time of elections. Political parties present these manifestos by these people get political training.

9) Most populous government;

Democracy is the most popular system of govt. in these days, people elect their representatives by their votes. The public make laws and policies according to will of people and get their support and favour.
