DESCRIPTION

Slides prepared by Sarah Currier for Jon Mason's session on LOM and DC metadata during Linked Data session at DC-2009, Wed. 14th October 2009. These slides update the current state of play between DC-Education Application Profile Task Group and other educational metadata initiatives, esp. ISO MLR and IEEE LOM Next.

DC-Ed Application Profile Module Aim: to provide a “modular” AP to support interoperable

description of educational aspects of resources. Scope: educationally significant properties available in

Dublin Core + any other educational properties, e.g. elements from the LOM.

Out-of-scope: will not define or give guidelines for usage of non-educational properties, or non-educational usage of properties.

Modular: aim to enable people to “plug in” the AP with other APs they are using, e.g. the Libraries AP, the Scholarly Works AP, Collection Description AP, a modular accessibility AP, or a local AP.

DC-Ed Application Profile Module: Progress Requirements gathering: 49 use cases gathered from 23 countries

and a range of educational sectors. Functional requirements: generic ones drafted; specific ones

based on use cases to be completed. Domain model: draft domain model completed (work-in-progress) To be determined based on all of above Proposed elements (new and existing): To be determined based

on above. Some will likely be from IEEE LOM. Description Set Profile: Requirements still to be determined (first

attempt at modular AP; DSP requirements unclear; LOM elements require completion of DCMI/IEEE Task Force work).

Usage Guidelines: To be developed.

DCMI/IEEE LTSC Task Force: ProgressTwo documents for joint publication in

development:◦ Resource Description Framework (RDF) Vocabulary for

IEEE Learning Object Metadata (LOM) Data Elements.◦ Recommended Practice for Expressing IEEE Learning

Object Metadata Instances Using the Dublin Core Abstract Model.

Remainder of 2009:◦ Extract RDF vocabulary.◦ Prepare drafts for balloting process within IEEE.◦ Sync process with DCMI publication process.◦ Process ballot feedback and prepare for final publication.

DC-Ed Application Profile Module: ProgressWhy haven’t we made much progress since

DC2008 Berlin?

Attention to educational metadata work has been diverted in a number of directions in 2009, including:◦ IEEE LTSC LOM Next◦ ISO MLR◦ DCMI/IEEE LTSC Task Force hiatus◦ DC-Ed Moderators’ hiatus

IEEE LTSC LOM Next WG spent 2009 on: Moving forward with completing Corrigenda on LOM (now

very nearly complete) Ratifying LOM as a standard for another 5 years (now

complete).◦ We now await LOM Next: what will DC-Ed’s relationship

be with that work?

DC2008 Berlin?

ISO MLR spent 2009 on: Working on a new educational metadata standard. This work engaged the time of many of DC-Ed’s

expert working members. A lot of effort has gone into ensuring that the ISO

MLR is compatible with the DCAM.

DC2008 Berlin?

DCMI/IEEE LTSC Task Force experienced a brief, unavoidable hiatus in 2009: DC-Ed AP TG will need standard expression of LOM

elements within DCAM for our own DSPs. Task Force is now back online and gearing up for

final tasks in getting documents ratified and published by IEEE LTSC and DCMI.

DCMI Education Co-Moderators experienced their own hiatus in 2009: Both Diane and Sarah moved out of institutional

settings and had less funded time and effort to give. The afore-mentioned initiatives removed much of

the support from other educational metadata experts from working directly on DC-Education.

We need more people with expertise & time to give!
