On September 7, 1982, David Ogilvy, iconic business man and author, sent the following internal memo to all agency employees, titled “How to Write”:

  • 6. Here are 10 hints:
  • 7. Read the Roman-Raphaelson book on writing. Read it 3 times.
  • 8. Write the way you talk. Naturally.
  • 9. words sentences Use short paragraphs
  • 10. Never use jargon words.They are hallmarks of a pretentious ass.
  • 11. Never write more than two pages on any subject.
  • 12. Check your quotations.
  • 13. Never send a letter or a memo on the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning and then edit it.
  • 14. If its something important,
  • 15. Before you send your letter or your memo, make sure its crystal clear what youwant the recipient to do.
  • 16. If you want ACTION, dont write. Go and tell the guy what you want.
