Some common culture questions

• What is culture?

• How is one’s culture formed? (nature or nurture?)

• Why do we have cultures?

What is culture?

• 1952 Alfred Kroeber and Clyde Kluckhohn - 160 different definitions.

• We have all experienced culture

• How do we define it ?

Culture Formation: my theory

• Shift when societies changed (end of 18th century)

• Culture became more shared among countries, rather than class

• Nowadays, more subcultures than cultures

Why do we have cultures?

• Culture as a means of survival

• Need to fit in- Mimicking & understanding others

• Some things are universal (although done slightly differently)

Brief Encounters Activity Explanation

• Look at your paper & understand your “culture”

• You will be given two ½ of the globe. You need to obtain 1 of each (complete globe)

• Important- stay in character throughout the activity

• Take 10 minutes to speak with others and acquire the necessary resources

Discussion

• What did you observe about your culture and how it interacted with individuals of the other culture?

• How did you overcome the cultural differences?

• How can this activity relate to the real world?
