KomperdaBinary Covalent Compounds

Compounds that have two elements (binary)

Are the combination of two non-metals

Electrons are SHARED, so don’t worry about balancing charges

KomperdaRules for Naming Binary Covalent Compounds

1. The first element is named first, using the full name of the element

2. The second element is named by dropping the ending and adding the suffix -ide

3. Prefixes are used to denote the numbers of atoms present (the subscripts indicate the numbers of atoms present)

4. The prefix mono- is never used for the first element, only the second
