2. Hello. I am Mr. Kahpie Rite.Today, we are going to learn aboutcopyright laws. 3. Dont WorryThis isnt the MOST exciting lesson. BUTit is veryIMPORTANT.As new and upcoming educators in SarasotaCounty, knowing and understanding these laws willprotect you, your students, and your career.Your comprehension of copyright laws will alsoenhance the teaching and learning environmentyou create. 4. ???How will it enhance our teaching environment by just knowing the copyright laws? 5. Mr. Smith, that is an excellentquestion!Hopefully, by the end of ourdiscussion and after I share somekey points, you will know. 6. Copyright is a law that protectsintellectual properties. What is intellectual property? 7. Intellectual property is anything that is created intoa fixed medium like a song, a picture, writing, awebsite, a sculpture, electronics, shoes, and almostanything else.Basically, if you can see it, hear it, taste it, touchit, or smell it, it is very likely it is protected by acopyright law somewhere down the line. 8. Actually, a good thing to note is that thisconceptthe concept of protecting authors workscan be traced back to the Constitution of theUnited States, back in 1787.The invention of things like computers, theinternet, smartphones, digital recording, and smartpads, copyright issues are becoming more relevant. 9. Well, if everything is protected by copyrightlaws, how can we legally use any of the informationwe find?Even as teachers, we cant know everything. I meanwe have to use or borrow information thatsomeone else had found all the time. 10. Copyright laws are in place to protect thepeople. They protect the people whocreate, but they protect the public ingeneral.Copyright laws are supposed to helppromote advancements in sciences and arts.In 1787, the term science refers to the act oflearning. Educators, therefore, have somespecial privileges. 11. For the most part, educators are protected by theFair Use policy. It is permissible, again most of the time, foreducators to use portions of copyrighted works inthe original condition for the use of educationand research. You must not alter the original work in any way ordevalue the original work. 12. Well then, if we are going toprotected by the Fair Usepolicy, then why should we beconcerned with the copyrightlaws? 13. Very simple. You could lose your job and any future career asan educator.Copyright offenses are federal offences dealtwith by the supreme courts (I wouldnt want togo there). You could misguide your students. You could have to live with the guilt of copyrightinfringement. 14. QUIZ TIME1. What are intellectual properties? List as many examples as you can?2. Would an impromptu speech be protected by copyright laws?3. Is it legal, for you as educators, to use a part or some parts of someone elses original work in your lessons?4. If something does not have the copyright seal, does it mean it is free to use at will?5. If you are unsure about using information you find can you and should you contact the person who made it? 15.
