• The Constitution says how the government works:– We have a President

– We have a Congress

– We have a Court system

Bill of RightsBill of Rights

Rights are things that all people have because they live in the United States.

The Bill of Rights is a part of the constitution and lists the rights of the people.

The FramersThe Framers• In 1787, a group of men met to write the

Constitution. They did not like the way the country was going. They fixed it by creating the Constitution.

• We call these men The Framers.

• Some of the framers are very famous.– George Washington was a Framer.

– So was Ben Franklin.

Page 9: Consititution Day

• The Framers met during a hot summer. They had a lot of arguments. In the end, they agreed to the words in the Constitution. They knew they had to agree. If they did not agree, the fighting would keep going.

• After the Framers wrote the Constitution, they asked the states to approve it. It took some time, but all the states did approve it.

Page 10: Consititution Day

• Some people did not like the Constitution.

• Some were afraid because it did not do enough to protect the rights of the people.

• It had no Bill of Rights.

Page 11: Consititution Day

• Promises were made to add a Bill of Rights.

• After the Constitution passed, the Bill of Rights was added.

• The Bill of Rights is the first ten changes to the Constitution.

Page 12: Consititution Day

• The Bill of Rights is very important.

• It protects important ideas.

• It protects your right to say what you want.

• It lets you think for yourself.

• It keeps the laws from being too hard.

• It gives rules for the police.

Page 15: Consititution Day

• The Constitution sets up the government. –It is split into three parts.

• Congress

• President

• Courts

Page 16: Consititution Day

• One part is the Congress. – The Congress makes laws.

– The people elect the members of Congress.

Page 18: Consititution Day

The Last Part is the Courts.

• The Courts decide what the law means when there is a question

Page 19: Consititution Day

• All of the parts have to work together.

• Just like the Framers agreed on the Constitution, the parts have to agree on the laws.

• No part has too much power.

• The power is shared.

• This helps protect the people.

God Bless the USA

If tomorrow all the things were gone

I worked for all my life

And I had to start again with just my

Children and my wife

I’d thank my lucky stars to be living here today

‘Cause the flag still stands for freedom

And they can’t take that away

Page 22: Consititution Day

And I’m proud to be an American

Where at least I know I’m free

And I won’t forget the men who died

Who gave that right to me

And I’ll gladly stand up next to you

And defend her still today

‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land

God Bless the USA.

From the lakes of Minnesota

To the hills of Tennessee

Across the plains of Texas

From sea to shining sea

From Detroit down to Houston

And New York to L.A.

Where there’s pride in every American heart

And it’s time to stand and say

Page 24: Consititution Day

That I’m proud to an American

Where at least I know I’m free

And I won’t forget the men who died

Who gave that right to me

And I’ll gladly stand up next to you

And defend her still today

‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land

God Bless the USA.
