Station 1: Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

UDL maximize learning for all students by taking into consideration backgrounds, knowledge, strengths, interest, and abilities. . Which aspect interests you the most?

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a philosophy of instructional design that seeks to create instructional learning environments and materials that proactively value diversity by embedding supports for students to foster access and engagement Edyburn (2013).

Multiple means of representation Multiple means of expression Multiple means of engagement(Edyburn, 2013).Three major principles of UDL implemented to enhance instruction by focusing on the various learning needs. Learning is continuous aspect of life, why must teachers find avenues to engage ?

UDL Information

What is UDL? In order to meet curriculum goals and help diverse

learners, educators can minimize barriers by implementing Universal Design for Learning (UDL) approach (CAST (2010). UDL maximize learning for all students by taking into consideration backgrounds, knowledge, strengths, interest, and abilities. UDL provides students the ability to learn.

UDL is incorporated in classrooms to reach children with or without disabilities and ELL students. UDL and technology can be incorporated into a learning environment to meet the students’ needs and work at their own pace.

Learning can become tailored to each learner based on their needs and they can be motivated and engaged through technological systems or software. In various classrooms, students use software such text to speech to help listen to stories. This assistive technology has helped my ELL students read text in English and home language. Also, the UDL Principles calls for varied and flexible ways to present information, plan or execute learning, and engage students in the learning process(Edyburn (2013).

Impact of Universal Design for Learning on teaching and learning

Example:Logical/mathematical learners like to solve problems, analyze, and predict incorporating puzzles, manipulative, pattern games, number sequences activities to teach (Newman, 2013).

Each learning style and multiple intelligences has to be taken into consideration for learning to occur. Students background knowledge has to coincide with learning . Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligence, focuses on eight various types of intelligence, which guides the ways individuals learn and process information. Newman (2013) “the most important thing we must remember is that each student possesses all eight intelligences” and “that most people can develop these intelligences to an adequate level of competency” (Newman, 2013, section 8.2). Implementing Gardner’s theory in the classroom will take planning to tailor activities and learning to each children’s need.

Mission Statement, Belief, and Goals

Mission and Belief Statement:To create student success through integrating technology to reach graduation, and to provide students with a pathway to a future career path..Goals: Use 21st century skills to Think

critically, creativity, collaborate, communicate and improve learning

Uphold integrity and respect of self and others

Be able to connect education to every aspect of the real-world

According to the Office of Career , Technical, and Adult Education, “The Division of Academic and Technical Education is responsible for helping all students acquire challenging academic and technical skills and be prepared for…the 21st century…” (Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education, n.d.).

Information and New TechnologyMost people in today’s society, have become accustomed to the ease of access that technology provides, which in itself peaks their interest. They may, however, fail to correlate the use of technological devices, such as iPads, to the learning environment, but it will aid in the following ways: Prepare students for a technology driven society Allow the students to interact through social media formatted

instruction Present information through various needed forms based on

learner needMy school, courses, and students will benefit from the technology bond in the following ways: Increase student participation and motivation Prepare the students for career and the future Students will be excited to engage and be an active participant in

their own learning(student centered learning) Diversity barriers will be overcome
